Romain Bardet wins Tour stage 18

The Race: Today was the 2015 Tour's second Alpine day. And among the day's challenges are the  Col du Glandon, 22 kilometers that average 5.1%
Here's how Le Tour saw things:

During stage 17, Chris Froome's direct adversaries have given a taste of their intentions to attack him from very far out. The yellow jersey holder expects to be put under pressure again. He'll be on the rollers prior to the start in Gap because that's a brutal one with the 6-km long ascent to Col Bayard right from the gun.

Simon Geschke must have inspired many riders who aren't used to getting the honors at the Tour de France. A breakaway is expected to take shape on the Route Napoleon, two hundred years after the French Emperor chose this way to return to power after his first retirement on the Elba island. It's a road for courageous fighters but the worst is to come after exiting it, going to the col du Glandon through the category 2 col de la Morte and its tricky downhill.

The ascent to the Glandon is officially 21.7km long. In reality, from Séchilienne, it's 47 kilometers of climbing. It seems like never ending. The summit is almost with 40km to go. After that, there'll be the scenic and unprecedented Lacets de Montvernier: the last chance of the day for Quintana and company to attack Froome.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

Louis Meintjes of Mtn-Qhubeka was not able to start. He finished stage 16 in pain and was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where he was found to have a severe case of gastroenteritis. That left the Tour's peloton at 162 riders, who started at 12:20 PM.

Almost at the start, the riders faced the second-category  Col Bayard and the attacks began immediately. Very quickly there were 29 riders off the front: Jakob Fuglsang (Astana), Romain Bardet, Jan Bakelants, Christophe Riblon (AG2R-La Mondiale), Thibaut Pinot (FDJ), Roman Kreuziger, Michael Rogers (Tinkoff-Saxo), Jonathan Castroviejo and Winner Anacona (Movistar), Damiano Caruso and Rohan Dennis (BMC), Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal), Georg Preidler (Giant-Alpecin), Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha), Michael Matthews and Simon Yates (Orica-GreenEdge), Pierre Rolland, Cyril Gautier, Romain Sicard, Thomas Voeckler (Europcar), Julian Arredondo, Bob Jungels (Trek), Ruben Plaza (Lampre-Merida), Andrew Talansky, Ryder Hesjedal, Dan Martin (Cannondale-Garmin), Stef Clement (IAM Cycling), Jan Barta (Bora-Argon 18 ) and Serge Pauwels (MTN-Qhubeka).

As they crested the Bayard, the group was 3min 10sec ahead of the peloton. And after climbing the third-category Rampe du Motty, the pack was nearly five minutes back.

Then, it had to happen. Six riders left the break on the Côte de la Mure: Fuglsang, De Gendt, Rodriguez, Pauwels, Voeckler and Clement. After 68 kilometers, the six were fifteen seconds ahead of the main part of the break and five in front of the peloton.

And then a few kilometers later, on the Col de Malissol, the six sat up and waited for the main break.

After two hours of racing and 117 kilometers, the 29 breakaways were 5min 36sec in front of the main group.

By being first over the Malissol, Joaquin Rodriguez became the new King of the Mountains, two points ahead of Chris Froome. As the riders went up the second-category Col de la Morte, Etixx-Quick Step rider Mark Renshaw abandoned.

Closing in on the crest of the Morte, Rodriguez telegraphed his intentions, moving to the front and then accelerating. Astana rider Jakob Fuglsang tried to match him, but again then mountain's crest belonged to Rodriguez, allowing him to cement his ownership of the Mountains classification.

The riders sped down the hill, into a headwind, to make their appointment with the giant Glandon. Giant-Alpecin put several riders at the front of peloton to lead the main group, now 3min 40sec behind the break, down the mountain.

As the break started climbing the Glandon, it broke apart then reformed and as they approached the intermediate sprint, the 29 were together again. For once, Peter Sagan was not in the front group and contesting the sprint.

Thomas de Gendt took the intermediate sprint and on the Glandon's lower slopes the break began to split up. And further back, the Morte's descent broke broke up the main peloton.

Jakob Fuglsang had been working the escape's front hard a lot of the morning, driving it with a will. Fuglsang announced before the day's start that he really wanted a stage win today. The eleven off the front who had separated themselves from the break: Fuglsang, Bakelants, Anacona, Caruso, De Gendt, Rodriguez, Voeckler, Plaza, Talansky, Martin and Barta. There were no Ag2r riders there and the three French team members worked hard to reunify the break.

Thomas de Gendt attacked at the Glandon began to rise. The peloton was keeping the break on a short leash. With 65 kilometers to race, the main pack was 2min 28sec behind de Gendt. Even on the lower slopes of the big mountain, especially on the corners, the crowds of spectators were huge.

De Gendt was caught and quickly there were riders scattered up and down the mountain's slopes. Leading the peloton, Sky had a several riders around race leader Chris Froome.

With 57 kilometers to go, there were twelve riders 2min 10sec ahead of the 23 in the Froome/Sky led peloton: Fuglsang, Bardet, Pinot, Anacona, Caruso, Rodriguez, Rolland, Gautier, Jungels, Talansky, Pinot and Pauwels. Now they had a tailwind.

With 48 kilometers to go, on the steepest part of the Glandon, Thibaut Pinot was caught by the Froome group, now 2min 25sec behind the now-eleven riders off the front. Richie Porte was unable to stay with the Froome group.

A few kilometers from the top, Fuglsang crashed as he pulled over after taking a pull leading the break. He sat on the ground, stunned for a while as mechanics put new wheels on his bike. He remounted, but was now well back from the lead riders. Back in the field, Contador attacked and joined riders further up.

Romain Bardet was first over the Glandon, followed by Winner Anacona. The Contador group was 2min 23sec back. Back in the Yellow Jersey group, Vincenzo Nibali attacked, drawing Nairo Quintana. Froome was quickly on them, but that caused Alejandro Valverde to get dropped. The Froome group crested the Glandon fifteen seconds behind Contador. On the descent the Froome group soon caught Contador.

Valverde was quickly back with the Froome/Contador group. Up front, Romain Bardet was 40 seconds ahead of the break, speedily descending the Glandon with skill, three minutes ahead of Froome.

The final ascent, the Lacets de Montvernier, was a mountain face covered with switchbacks. Bardet still had 35 seconds near the top, chased by Bob Jungels.

Over the top of the Montvernier, Bardet was 49 seconds ahead of Fuglsang, who recovered from his crash, Rolland and Anacona. Nibali again attacked near the top as the Yellow Jersey group crested the mountain, but the others were quickly on his wheel.

Bardet's descent was again done with skill and courage. He used the entire road, regularly outpacing the following motorcycle. Pierre Rolland chased, a half-kilometer back.

After the descent, Bardet kept driving hard.

And he did it. Bardet crossed the line alone to take a beautiful victory in a difficult stage. A little more than a half-minute later Pierre Rolland came in second for a French 1-2. Froome and the contenders finished together about three minutes later. Froome had a relatively easy day, not really getting any serious challenge to his leadership today.
