Thibaut Pinot wins Tour de France stage 20

The Race: Today was the last day in the high mountains before Sunday's high-speed jam on Paris' Champs Élysées. The riders faced only two serious climbs, but they are the real thing, the 29-kilometers ascent of the Croix de Fer and the leg-breaking Alpe d'Huez. The latter's fourteen kilometers at eight percent had the potential to shake up the standings if any rider had an off-day.

Weather at 1:30 PM at Modane was cloudy, 15C/60F. Wind was from the WSW at 19 km/hr. No chance of rain and the temperature was supposed to warm to 22C. A great day for a bicycle race.

Here's how Le Tour saw things:

L'Alpe d'Huez has never been so close to Paris. For the first time ever, the iconic climb of the modern history of the Tour de France is on the eve of the final stage on the Champs-Elysées. The suspense is still on. Chris Froome is ready for one last duel with Nairo Quintana. He considers himself in an excellent position with an advantage of 2.38 ahead of a short conclusive stage in the Alps but stage 19 to La Toussuire has evidenced that the Colombian hasn't said his last word.

Team Sky also looks vulnerable in some ways, as Geraint Thomas didn't expect to drop down from fourth to fifteenth place in only one day. There'll be another race within the race with Romain Bardet leading the King of the Mountains competition with only three points over Chris Froome and twelve over Joaquim Rodriguez.

The winner of the popular polka dot jersey probably won't be known before the ascent to L'Alpe d'Huez where the points will be doubled up, so it'll be 50 to the stage winner. Froome might be tempted to crown it all.

FDJ's DS Yvon Madiot said this before the stage, “It's going to be a hard stage but it might as well be a very controlled race because everyone will defend his position on GC. We've got two goals: to have a rider in the early breakaway and Thibaut Pinot to fight with the top GC guys at L'Alpe d'Huez.”

At 1:18 PM 160 riders rolled away and immediately, as if to give truth to Madiot's words, FDJ's Alexandre Geniez and Ramunas Navardauskas attacked. The pair were soon joined by Lars Bak (Lotto-Soudal) and Nicolas Edet (Cofidis). After fifteen kilometers of mostly downhill, the quartet was about two minutes ahead of a seemingly disinterested field.

As the four escapees made it to the lower slopes of the Croix de Fer, they were 7min 20sec ahead of a still-unworried peloton. The peloton was led by several Sky riders.

Movistar said second-place Nairo Quintana would attack on the Croix de Fer. They knew that if Quintana were to win the 2015 Tour, he couldn't wait until the final climb to gain the needed two and a half minutes.

As the riders made their way up the mountain, ten riders went clear of the field and began seriously chasing the four up the road. Unhappy with Sky's slow pacing of the pack, Ag2r took over the job of riding at the peloton's front.

The peloton caught the ten, except for Winner Anacona, Ruben Plaza and Rafal Majka. Then Majka accelerated and only Anacona could stay with him. After 42 kilometers of racing, the four leaders were 5min 24sec ahead of Anacona/Majka and 5min 31sec in front of the peloton.

The pack chased down Anacona and Majka, and 46 kilometers into the stage and 12 km from the summit, there were just the four, about five minutes ahead. Ag2r's Jean-Christophe Peraud continued to lead the peloton as he had for quite some time, setting a warm, but not hot pace.

Not long later Astana moved to the front and then all the big GC men also got near the point of of the peloton. Up front Geniez attacked his fellow breakaways and went clear.

BAM! Alejandro Valverde attacked. Needing to contain the move, Sky, led by Nicolas Roche, went to the front of the now sharply reduced peloton.

Double BAM! Quintana went and quickly made it up to teammate Valverde. This felt like a well-planned set-piece. Froome had only Richie Porte. All the other Sky riders had been dropped.

Needing Valverde for the descent, Quintana had to slow for his teammate. Further back, Contador was dropped and soon it was just Froome and Nibali chasing the riders up the road.

Here's how the riders went over the crest of the Croix de Fer: Alexander Geniez, followed at 50 seconds by Navardauskas and Edet. Then at 70 seconds, Lars Bak. 2min 20sec after Geniez, Quintana and Valverde crested, followed 15 seconds later by Froome and Nibali.

As the race crossed the valley for its appointment with Alpe d'Huez, with 26 kilometers to go, Geniez was 1min 40sec ahead of Bak/Edet, 3min 10sec in front of seven riders that included Hesjedal and Rolland and 4min ahead of the Yellow Jersey group, led by Sky. Soon Bak and Edet were caught by by the seven chasers, making a group of nine riding 1min 52sec behind Geniez.

As the Yellow Jersey group just started the Alpe d'Huez ascent, Nibali flatted. He got the fastest bike change I've ever seen and was soon chasing with the help of teammates. Meanwhile, Quintana was attacking. Richie Porte brought the chasing riders back up to him.

Quintana went again, and was again chased down. But the damage inflicted by Quintana was profound. With eleven kilomters to go, the Yellow Jersey group was down to about six riders.

Then Valverde went. Froome did not react, surely thinking he was no GC threat at this point. Nibali, performing an extraordinary chase, made contact with the Froome group.

Again and again Quintana attacked and finally, about nine kilometers from the top, he got clear. Quickly he closed up to teammate Valverde as they made common cause to distance themselves from Froome.

The intense efforts broke everything up. Contador was dropped from the Froome group and then it was just Froome being led by two teammates. Quintana dropped Valverde and made it up to Anacona. The two Colombians made common cause, a half minute ahead of Froome. Quintana still needed two more minutes to win the Tour de France.

The crowds were huge and dense on the upper reaches of the mountain, making a narrow path for the riders. Under the five kilometer banner, it was Thibaut Pinot in the lead, followed a minute later by Anacona/Quintana and at 1min 29sec, the Froome group.

With 4.4 kilometers to go, Quintana dropped Anacona and was a minute ahead of Froome. At three kilometers, Quintana had a minute. There is a 10-second bonus for winning the stage.

Two kilometers: 1min 15sec.

Thibaut Pinot won the stage. Quintana followed in 18 seconds later. Ryder Hesjedal was third, then Valverde and Froome at 1min 38sec. Barring extraordinary misfortune in the final stage, Chris Froome has won the 2015 Tour de France.
