Weather at the finish at Le Grand Bornand at 1:30 PM, local time: 24C (76F), partly cloudy with the wind from the NNW at 11 km/hr (7 mph). A small chance of rain in the late afternoon.
The race: 165 riders began stage 10 at 1:39 PM.
Here's the organizer's telling of the day's racing:
Julian Alaphilippe of Quick Step Floors claimed his first ever Tour de France stage win after he took his first classic earlier this year with the Flèche wallonne. It’s the first French victory of the 105th Tour de France as stage 10 was the first in the mountains. But the inaugural mountain stage didn’t impact the hierarchy of the overall ranking. Greg Van Avermaet even retained the yellow jersey as part of the breakaway that went from far out.
165 riders started stage 10 at Annecy. 2 non-starters: Alexis Vuillermoz (AG2R-La Mondiale) and Jens Keukeleire (Lotto-Soudal). After Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step) and Florian Vachon (Fortuneo-Samsic) got brought back after 10km of racing, Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Energie) rode away with Thomas Degand (Wanty-Groupe Gobert) and Marcus Burghardt (Bora-Hansgrohe).
A group of 21 riders was formed in several moves between the col de Bluffy (km 19) and the intermediate sprint won by Peter Sagan at km 29. It comprised Tony Gallopin (AG2R), Elie Gesbert and Amaël Moinard (Cofidis), Ion Izagirre (Bahrain-Merida), Jack Bauer and Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott), Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Alaphilippe and Philippe Gilbert (Quick Step), Sagan and Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe), Serge Pauwels and Tom-Jelte Slagter (Dimension Data), David Gaudu, Rudy Molard and Arthur Vichot (Groupama-FDJ), Robert Gesink (LottoNL-Jumbo), Lilian Calmejane and Rein Taaramäe (Direct Energie), Guillaume Martin and Degand (Wanty-Groupe Gobert).
The group split up the col de la Croix-Fry, the first cat. 1 KOM of the 105th Tour de France, Molard beating Taaramäe at the top. Gaudu led the charge but was overtaken by Alaphilippe before the first H.C. KOM at Plateau des Glières. The winner of the Flèche wallonne forged on by himself on the 1.8km long dirt road where Chris Froome (Sky) had a flat tyre before returning to the main peloton. The difference between the fifteen riders regrouped at the front and the bunch led by Team Sky was 6’40’’ with 90km to go. The gap kept increasing in the long downhill to the valley. 8 minutes was the maximum difference as 18 riders regrouped at the front, Bauer, Sagan and Pöstlberger being successively reeled in.
Taaramäe attacked 7km before the summit of col de Romme while Warren Barguil (Fortuneo-Samsic) rode away from the peloton by himself. Alaphilippe rejoined Taaramäe with 4km to go to the top of the hill. The Quick Step rider went solo to crest in first position, 15’’ ahead of the Estonian. He increased his advantage in the downhill and in the following ascent to col de la Colombière. He passed the last climb with 1’30’’ lead over the first chaser Ion Izagirre. He didn’t make any mistake in the descent to Le Grand-Bornand and had time to enjoy his first Tour de France victory. Fourth on the line, Van Avermaet who was designated the most combative rider of the day courageously retained the yellow jersey in the first Alpine stage.
Here are our stage 10 live updates:
Km 40: Climbing the first-category Croix Fry, there are 21 riders who are 2min 40sec ahead of the Sky-led peloton. GC leader Greg van Avermaet is in the front group. As expected, even as I write this the lead group is breaking up.
The intermediate sprint at km 29 was won by Peter Sagan.
Km 50: Rudy Molard (Groupama-FDJ) was first over the Croix Fry.
On the descent there are eight riders in front: Moinard, Van Avermaet, Gilbert, Pöstlberger, Pauwels, Molard, Gaudu and Taaramäe. Another twelve racers are 39 seconds back. The peloton is four minutes behind the leading eight.
Km 60: The eight leaders have begun ascending the Hors Category Monté du Plateau des Glières. Just after the riders crest the climb, they will encounter 1.8 kilometers of dirt road. The last time the Tour went over an unpaved road was in 1987 when the riders went over the Col du Coq.
Km 85: Julian Alaphilippe was the first to the top of the Plateau des Glières. On the dirt section that followed Chris Froome flatted, but teammate Jonathan Castroviejo gave him a wheel and Froome was quickly back in the pack.
There are now 15 riders in the front group, including Yellow Jersey Greg van Avermaet. The peloton with Chris Froome and Peter Sagan is 7min 31sec back.
Km 110: The front group of now 18 riders is 6min 51sec ahead of the peloton.
Km 128: Julian Alaphilippe was first over the Col de Romme. Fifteen seconds later Rein Taaramae went over, followed by Sege Pauwels. 45 seconds after Alaphilippe, a small group with Greg van Avermaet crested the mountain. The peloton is 5min 36sec behind Alaphilippe.
Km 138: At the start of the the Colombière Julian Alaphilippe is 15 seconds ahead of Rein Taaramae. This should be an interesting duel.
Km 150: Alaphilippe as the first over the Colombière with Jon Izagirre 1min 30sec back and Rein Taaramae 2min behind Alaphilippe. Greg van Avermaet went over at 2min 35sec and looks to keep his Yellow Jersey another day.
The finish: Julian Alaphilippe wins his first Tour de Frace stage.
