Nairo Quintana

Nairo Quintana takes a solo win at St. Lary Soulon.

stage 17 mountainsRated ascents:

Weather at Saint-Lary Soulan at 2:00 PM, local time: 27C (80F), mostly cloudy with the wind from the north at 6 km/hr (4 mph). Thunderstorms are possible in the late afternoon.

Organizer's Stage 17 preview: Stage 17 is a mountain stage designed purely for attackers. It’s been thirty years since such a short stage wasn’t put on the map: 38km from Tarbes to Pau but it was a morning half-stage won by Adrie Van der Poel (ten years after Bernard Hinault put the peloton on strike to protest against the split stages on the same day). 65km in the mountains is unprecedented.

Pre-race operations will offer a new kind of spectacle, including the necessary warm-up session because it’s the col de Peyresourde to start with! It’s not the hardest climb but it can make a difference from the gun, especially if some domestiques can’t make it back to the front of the bunch on time. Moreover, the final ascent is a grueling one. The col du Portet has been asphalted just a few weeks before the Tour. It’s the Souvenir Henri Desgrange, the highest peak of the whole race (at 2215m of altitude, 100 meters taller than the Tourmalet), just as hard as the Mont Ventoux! It’s a big test for race leader Geraint Thomas with runner up Chris Froome ready to take over, if needed.

It's an unprecedented start today, on a Formula 1-type grit, with the first riders on GC starting at the front according to their ranking. There's no neutral zone. After 100 metres of racing, it'll be the beginning of the ascent to col de Peyresourde.

The race: 146 riders began stage 17 at 3:15 PM, local time.

Here's the organizer's telling of the day's racing:

Nairo Quintana claimed the 19th Colombian stage victory at the Tour de France and the third this year after two bunch sprints by Fernando Gaviria, making the South American nation the most successful so far. The Movistar climber took the highest summit of the 105th edition in a solo move in the last climb to col du Portet. Geraint Thomas extended his lead in the overall ranking.

146 riders took the start of the 65-km long Pyrenean stage in Bagnères-de-Luchon. One non-starter: Philippe Gilbert (Quick Step). The top 10 riders on GC had a special position on the starting grit but Tanel Kangert (Astana) was the first attacker in the first kilometre. Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) was first to rejoin him but 5km before the first summit at Peyragudes, Kangert was alone in the lead again with an advantage of 25’’ over Jesus Herrada (Cofidis), Kristijan Durasek (UAE Team Emirates) and Julian Alaphilippe (Quick Step) who continued his quest for the King of the Mountain title. The Frenchman was second to the Estonian at the top.

Alaphilippe and Durasek rejoined Kangert two kilometres before the intermediate sprint at Loudenvielle (km 27.5) where the Astana rider passed in first position. Three minutes behind the leading trio, Pierre Latour was first to up the tempo for AG2R-La Mondiale 6km before the top summit of Val Louron, the second category 1 KOM of the day. Durasek lost contact with Alaphilippe and Kangert who crested the col de Val Louron in that order. 15km before the finish line at col du Portet, Kangert found himself alone in the lead again. Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar) attacked from the yellow jersey group. Chris Froome reacted to an attack by Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo) but Tom Dumoulin (Sunweb) eventually brought the yellow jersey back.

With 10km to go, Kangert had 50’’ lead over Alejandro Valverde, Quintana (Movistar) and Rafal Majka (Bora-Hansgrohe) and 1’30’’ over the yellow jersey group. Quintana and Majka seized the command of the race with 8.5km to go.

6.5km before the finish, Quintana rode away solo. Dan Martin (UAE Team Emirates) didn’t manage to bridge the gap to the Colombian. Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) lost contact with the yellow jersey group. Froome also couldn’t hold the pace when Roglic sped up again with 1.5km to go but Thomas kept the situation under control and put up the fastest ride of the favourites in the last 300 metres. Tom Dumoulin moved into second place in the overall ranking behind the Welshman from Team Sky.

Here are our stage 17 live updates:

As expected, the peloton broke up immediately. After nine kilometers, 21 riders in three groups are ahead of the Yellow Jersey group. Tanel Kangert is alone in front and is 17 seconds ahead of a group of four containing KOM Julian Alaphilippe.

Km 19: Tanel Kangert was first over the Monté de Peyragudes followed by KOM Julian Alaphilippe fifteen seconds later with Jesus Herrada and Kristijan Durasek right with him.

Nairo Quintana had a mechanical. Teammate Andrey Amador gave him a wheel and he was quickly back with the peloton, which is 3min 28sec behind Kangert.

Km 25: Kangert was caught by Alaphilippe and Durasek on the descent.

The trio is 42 seconds ahead of a lone chasing Jesus Herrada. 70 seconds behind the Kangert trio is a group of 11 with Adam Yates, Bauke Mollema, Rafal Majka and Alejandro Valverde. The Yellow Jersey group is 3min 30sec behind the Kangert group.

Km 42: Tanel Kangert won the intermediate sprint at km 27.5. But of course, Polka-Dot jersey owner Julian Alaphilippe was first over the Col de Val Louron-Azet. The Valverde group followed at 35 seconds and the Yellow Jersey Group at 2min 10sec.

Peter Sagan crashed on the descent.

Km 59: On the slopes of the Col du Portet Nairo Quintana is off the front, 26 seconds ahead of a hard-chasing Rafal Majka. Dan Martin is only a few seconds further back. The Yellow Jersey group is 1min 11sec behind Quintana. Romain Bardet was dropped by the Yellow Jersey Group.

Peter Sagan is almost 13 minutes back.

Km 62: Nairo Quintana remains off the front, 25 seconds ahead of Dan Martin. Rafal Majka has joined the Yellow Jersey group, a minute back.

The finish: Nairo Quintana won the stage with Dan Martin coming in 28 seconds later. Geraint Thomas was third at 47 seconds.
