The race: 165 riders began stage 14 at 1:23. There was a giant crash on the wet roads at kilometer 5.5. The race was neutralized.

Antonio Pedrero (Movistar) was badly hurt and was taken away in an ambulance.

The scene of the crash.

Louis Mentjes (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty), sitting in 13th place, had to abandon the Tour as well after injuring his arm in the crash.

The stage resumed with a 2 kilometer neutralized zone before the racing proper began at kilometer 8 at 2:01.

On the first climb of the day—the Col de Saxel—Alaphilippe, Van den Berg, Martinez and Neilands were at the front with Daniel Martinez being first to the top. Meanwhile, there was another casualty of the crash. Esteban Chavez abandoned.

On the descent a group of 19 riders came together behind a rapidly descending Alaphilippe.

Damn! There was another crash, taking down Romain Bardet and James Shaw. Both Shaw and Bardet had to quit the Tour. Bardet was later found to have a concussion.

Coming to the day's second climb, the Col de Cou, there was a group of 19 riders 20 seconds ahead of the Jumbo-Visma led peloton. Giulio Ciccone was first to the top, followed by Neilson Powless and the Julian Alaphilippe.

With 100 kilometers to go, Michael Woods attacked. Giulo Ciccone quickly joined him. Ciccone was first over the Col de Feu. After topping the hill Ciccone took off on his own. A few kilometers later he was joined by Pinot, Aranburu, Landa and Poels. The peloton was 1 minute 15 seconds back with some riders between the break and the pack.

With 85 kilometers to go there was a group of ten 20 seconds ahead of the pack: Pinot, Landa, Martin, Aranburu, Martinez, Gorka Izagirre, Poels, Houle, Ciccone and Lutsenko.

A few kilometers later Ramon Sinkeldam (Alpecin-Deceuninck) quit the race.

The break was kept on a short leash. With 70 kilometers to go the now 11 riders off the front were just 30 seconds ahead of the Jumbo-Visma led pack.

As the break began the day's penultimate (and brutal) climb, the first-category Col de la Ramaz, the 11 escapees had a 35 second gap. Soon Giulio Ciccone and Michael Woods were off the front of the break. Given the 10 KOM points available at the top of the Ramaz and the 20 the first to the top of the Joux-Plane would get, Ciccone could have the polka-dot jersey at the end of the day.

10 kilometers from the top of the Ramaz and 60 kilometers to the finish the break riders were caught by the pack with the exception of Ciccone and Woods. They had a gap of 20 seconds. Two kilometers later Woods and then Ciccone were also caught.

Towards the end of the Col de la Ramaz ascent Wout van Aert led Jumbo-Visma up the mountain. Surprsingly, GC eighth place Tom Pidcock could not stay with that group. Wout van Aert was the first over the summit followed by Wilco Kelderman and then Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. The cream was floating to the top.

There was the usual regrouping after the climb. With 30 kilometers to go there were 16 riders in the lead group: Wout van Aert, Sepp Kuss, Wilco Kelderman, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Felix Grossschartner, Rafal Majka, Adam Yates, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Simon Yates, Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Felix Gall (Ag2r-Citröen).

Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar) abandoned.

Next up, the monster Joux-Plane.

Wout van Aert led up the Joux Plane and blew up the lead group. 8.5 kiloemters from the summit there was a lead group of just seven riders: Kuss, Vingegaard, Pogacar, Adam Yates, Hindley, Rodriguez, Gall.

Stage 14's final ascent, the Joux Plane: the lead group of seven riders nine kilometers from the summit.

Sepp Kuss took over leading up the Joux Plane and dropped Jai Hindley. Then Adam Yates took over leading the group, causing all but Pogacar and Vingegaard to be dropped.

Four kilometers from the summit there were just three riders left up front, Pogacar & Adam Yates (both UAE Team Emirates) and Vingegaard.

Only Pogacar and Vingegaard can stay with Adam Yates up the Joux plane.

Bam! 3.7 kilometers from the top Pogacar attacked.

Two kilometers from the summit Vingegaard was 4 seconds behind Pogacar. Just before the summit Vingegaard caught Pogacar.

Vingegaard was first over the Joux Plane, earning 8 bonus seconds. Pogacar got 5 seconds for being second over the mountain.

Vingegaard & Pogacar dueling near the Joux Plane's summit.

On the descent Carlo Rodriguez and Adam Yates bridged up to Vingegaard and Pogacar. Pogacar's team explained what happened next: Pogačar was forced to abort his attempt of anticipating the action because of two motorbikes that were too close to the cyclists which meant both riders had to break and allow the comeback of Carlos Rodriguez, who then covered the downhill to Morzine at full speed. Then Rodriguez slipped away and soon had a 5 second lead.

Rodriguez made it stick and won his first Tour de France stage. Tadej Pogacar beat Jonas Vingegaard for second place. Vingegaard remained the GC leader.

Here's the race organizer's stage 14 summary:

Carlos Rodriguez took advantage of the rivalry between Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar to catch them and ride away from them in the downhill of col de Joux-Plane to become the youngest ever Spanish stage winner at the Tour de France at the age of 22. Vingegaard retained the yellow jersey.

MEINTJES, CHAVES AND BARDET ABANDON
The start proper of stage 14 was given to 165 riders at 13.23. The race was put on halt for half an hour after 6.5km due to a massive crash that forced Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and Antonio Pedrero (Movistar) to withdraw from the Tour de France. A second start was given at 14.01. Esteban Chaves (EF Education-EasyPost) pulled out in pain at km 15 while the first significant breakaway took shape with Lars van den Berg (Groupama-FDJ) being joined by Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quick Step) and Krists Neilands (Israel-Premier Tech) and later by Dani Martinez (Ineos Grenadiers) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana). Romain Bardet (DSM-Firmenich) and James Shaw (EF Education-EasyPost) crashed out in the downhill of col de Saxel at km 25.

2 CAT. 1 KOM FOR CICCONE
After tons of attempts, attacks, counter-attacks and riders being dropped, a lead group of 21 riders took shape. It included three men from the top 20 overall: Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious). Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X) and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) were very active, both interested in the King of the Mountains competition. Ciccone outsprinted polka dot jersey wearer Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost), Alaphilippe and Pinot at cat. 1 col de Cou (km 35.3). The Italian also crested cat. 1 col du Feu (km 52) first and forged on by himself in the downhill until Pinot, Landa, Alex Aranburu (Movistar) Wout Poels (Bahrain Victorious) and Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) came across. Pinot, Landa, Poels, Martin, Martinez, Ciccone, Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Alex Aranburu and Gorka Izagirre, (Movistar), Hugo Houle and Woods (Israel-PremierTech) managed to stay away while Jumbo-Visma kept them on a leash.

Ciccone passed the line of the intermediate sprint at col de Jambaz (km 65.5) in first position. Ciccone and Woods rode away at the beginning of the ascent to col de la Ramaz (km 101). Their former breakaway companions got reeled in 10km before the top while the yellow jersey group was down to about thirty riders including six from Jumbo-Visma and six from UAE Team Emirates. Ciccone surrendered two kilometres further. Van Aert crested col de la Ramaz in first position.

VINGEGAARD BEATS POGACAR ATOP JOUX-PLANE
16 riders were reunited at the front with 30km to go: Van Aert, Sepp Kuss, Wilco Kelderman, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Felix Grossschartner, Rafal Majka, Adam Yates, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe), Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos Grenadiers), Pello Bilbao (Bahrain Victorious), David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ), Simon Yates, Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) and Felix Gall (Ag2r-Citröen).

The team of the yellow jersey led the charge up to col de Joux-Plane, the 250th hors-category climb of the Tour de France since the inception of the label in 1979. 5km before the top, Hindley couldn’t hold the pace set by Kuss, the American being followed by Adam Yates, Pogacar, Vingegaard and Rodriguez. With 3.7km of climbing remaining, Pogacar attacked. The Slovenian remained 4’’ ahead of the Dane for two kilometres. Vingegaard made it across and sprinted to collect 8’’ time bonus and the lead in the KOM competition atop col de Joux-Plane. Rodriguez and Yates made the junction in the downhill. Rodriguez rode away solo with 8km to go and remained at the front till the end. He even moved one step up to take place in the top 3 instead of Hindley for one second.
