The Race: A six-man break (Francisco Aramendia, Jacques van Rensburg, Kristian Sbaragli, Nathan Haas, Valerio Conti and Romain Hardy) went very early. Nathan Haas was first over the day's only categorized climb, the Alto del Cabrito, thereby securing the blue and white polk-dot climber's jersey for tomorrow's stage.

Soon thereafter Haas and Sbaragli went back to the peloton while the other four continued. At one point they had a lead of five minutes, but the sprinters' teams were not going to let this one get away.

With fifteen kilometers remaining, the field was together with FDJ and Giant Shimano doing a lot of the work at the front.

Near the finish there were some tricky corners but the peloton negotiated them safely. FDJ gave its ace sprinter Nacer Bouhanni a perfect leadout. Bouhanni did not waste the opportunity and won the stage.

Alejandro Valverde is now the GC leader, taking over from teammate Jonathan Castroviejo.

Stage 2 Live Updates:

Weather at San Fernando, Spain: At 1PM local time it's 30C (86F), some clouds that should clear away for a sunny day. Wind from the south-southeast at 13 km/hr (8 mph).

Km 17, 157 km to go: There is only one categorized climb, the third category Alto del Cabrito, which comes at the stage's start. Near the top six riders went clear: Francisco Aramendia, Jacques van Rensburg, Kristian Sbaragli, Nathan Haas, Valerio Conti and Romain Hardy. Haas and Sbaragli attacked the break on the climb while the other four chased. The leading duo have gapped the peloton by 3min 40sec.

Haas was the first to crest the Cabrito followed by Sbaragli and the Conti. With that, Haas has hoovered up enough KOM points (there is only one categorized climb) to take the first climber's jersey at the end of the stage.

Km 30, 138 km to go: Haas and Sbaragli have let themselves get swept up by the pack, led by Movistar. There are four riders 3min 44sec in front of the peloton: Conti, Aramendia, van Rensburg and Hardy.

Km 50, 124 km to go: The break of four pushes on, now with a lead of 3min 58sec. The average speed for the stage so far is 41.7 km/hr.

Km 83, 91 km to go: After two hours of racing, the gap the four breakaways have to the pack had remained steady, just under four minutes. But it has jumped now to 4min 22sec.

Km 85: Jacques van Rensburg won the intermediate sprint at Conil de la Frontera, follwed by Valerio Conti and Francisco Aramendia. The break's lead has grown to 4min 52sec

Km 100, 74 km to go: The wind is blowing from the riders' left making life difficult for the break. After gaining a maximium lead of five minutes, the gap is down to about four minutes.

This is really a stage for the sprinters. Up until now Movistar, with race leader Jonathan Castroviejo, has been doing most of the work at the front of the peloton. Now FDJ and Giant-Shimano have put their shoulders to the wheel to work for speedsters Nacer Bouhanni and John Degenkolb.

Km 125, 49 km to go: The gap has really come down. Valerio Conti, Francisco Aramendia, Jacques van Rensburg and Romain Hardy lead the peloton by 2min 17sec

Km 132: Valerio Conti won the intermediate sprint at Puerto Real, followed by Romain Hardy and Jacques van Rensburg. There was a crash in the peloton and the most affected looked to be Fabio Felline. Felline is back up and chasing.

[In Hamburg at the Vattenfall Cyclassics, only 20 km remain. A break of about six has a lead of abut 10 seconds. Sky is leading the pack at the moment. Katusha has been doing a lot of work. Manuele Boaro (Tinkoff-Saxo) has attacked the break and so far is holding everyone at bay.]

25 km to go: The gap is down to 21 seconds.

In Hamburg, just 3 km to go and things are together for a big sprint.

Alexander Kristoff has won the Vattenfall Cyclassics.

15 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo is leading the pack. It looks like the break has been caught.

9 km to go: Still all together with the sprinters' teams hoping to get things right and take the GC lead with a stage win. Sky leads with Cannondale and IAM near the front. The finish is technical. The pack is rolling along at 54 km/hr.

3.5 km to go: Everyone wants to be first through a corner before things get technical. The peloton is really strung out.

Under the Red Kite: FDJ is at the front.

The finish: Nacer Bouhanni has a terrific leadout and wins the stage.
