The Race: Early on a break of six riders went clear: Jerome Cousin, Luis Mas Bonet, Jonathan Fumeaux, Danilo Wyss and Jacques van Rensburg. They were given a lot of freedom, at one point the escapees had a gap of more than eight minutes.
But it was a very hot day with four categorized climbs. First Fumeaux dropped back and then Luis Mas Bonet attacked the break. Mas Bonet stayed away long enough to be the first over the last two climbs and gain the KOM lead (though he is tied at nine points with Jerome Cousin).
With Orica-GreenEdge relentlessly pulling the peloton, eventually all the breakaway riders were caught.
Everyone knew the finish with a narrow bridge before a 6% grade to the finish. There was a mad scramble to the front to be well-positioned for the final kilometer. Orica-GreenEdge played it perfectly, though for a moment it looked like Katusha's Giampaolo Caruso was going to run away with all the glory. He attacked on the final grade to the finish, but didn't have enough suds to make it to the line. Dan Martin, Michael Matthews and Joaquin Rodriguez went flying by him.
It came down to a drag race between Martin and Matthews with Matthews the victor. With the time bonus for winning the stage, Matthews made it a double-coup, taking also the GC lead.

Weather: At Arcos de la Frontera, 2PM local time it's 32C (90F) and forecast to go up to 37C (99F). Wind from the west at 14 km/hr (9 mph), 43% humidity and no chance of rain.
Km 36, 162 km to go: A break of five riders has gone clear: Jerome Cousin, Luis Mas Bonet, Jonathan Fumeaux, Danilo Wyss and Jacques van Rensburg. They currently have a lead of 6 minutes.
Km 50, 148 km to go: The peloton is giving the five riders in the break a long leash. The gap has grown out to 8min 15sec. Average speed of the stage so far after 1hr 26min of racing is 34.9 km/hr. The stage does have four category three climbs, which begin about km 83 (see stage profile below the map).
Km 74, 124 km to go: Things have settled down a bit, The five riders in the break have a lead of 5min 42sec. Orica-GreenEdge has put some muscle at the front of the peloton to help with the chase.
Km 91, 107 to go: The climbing has begun. The first ascent is the Puerto de Galis. First to the top was Jerome Cousin, followed by Luis Mas Bonet and Danilo Wyss. The break is 4min 34sec ahead of the peloton.
Km 107, 91 km to go: The second climb, the third-category Alto Alcomocales, is in the rear-view mirror. Jerome Cousin was first over the crest, then Danilo Wyss and Luis Mas Bonet. The gap back to the field is 3min 50sec. Alberto Contador said he felt surprisingly good in the opening time trial, but felt some knee pain during stage two. He said today's stage will be his first serious test.
Km 121, 77 to go: On the way up the third-category Alto del Camino. It's hot! The five riders are slowly being pulled back. The gap is 2min 33sec. Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) told Eurosport that he believes the GC lead is within stage-win time bonification reach.
Km 123, 75 km to go: Jonathan Fumeaux has lost contact with his fellow breakaways, so the lead group is down to four, with a gap of 2min 50sec. In the back of the peloton, Peter Sagan is looking uncomfortable. Orica-GreenEdge is leading the pack.
Luis Mas Bonet (Caja Rural) has attacked the breakaway and is about 23 seconds in front of other three (Jerome Cousin, Danilo Wyss and Jacques van Rensburg).
65 km to go: Mas Bonet, jersey unzipped in the heat, hands on the drops, is 50 seconds ahead of the chasing trio and 4min 23sec ahead of the peloton. Movistar is working at the front.
At the Benaocaz intermediate sprint: 1st Luis Mas Bonet, 2nd Jacques van Rensburg and 3rd Danilo Wyss. Jonathan Fumeaux has been caught by the peloton.
Km 139, 59 to go: The Alto del Camino has been crested. First was Luis Mas Bonet, followed by Jerome Cousin 1min 22sec later and then Danilo Wyss. Mas Bonet is 4min 32sec ahead of the Orica-GreenEdge led pack. There is one more categorized ascent, the Puerto del Boyar.
Mas Bonet will probably be the King of the Mountains at the end of the day, a terrific result for his small Caja Rural team.
52 km to go: Orica-GreenEdge has at least five riders at the front of the peloton. Up front, Mas Bonet still looks good as he pushes on. His gap has come down to 3min 50sec.
49 km to go: Mas Bonet is starting to rock in the saddle and his gap is coming down. He's 1min 50sec ahead of the three chasers, but his gap back to the pack is about 3 minutes.
The Grazalema intermediate has been passed: 1st Luis Mas Bonet, 2nd Jacques van Rensburg, 3rd Danilo Wyss.
41 km to go: Only one rider is off the front, Luis Mas Bonet, 2min 18sec ahead of the peloton. The other breakaways (Wyss, Van Rensburg, Cousin) have been absorbed.
Results of the final categorized climb, the Puerto del Boyar: 1st Luis Mas Bonet, 2nd Danilo Wyss, 3rd Jerome Cousin.
34 km to go: Orica-GreenEdge seems to be stepping up the pace and several riders were having real trouble hanging on to the back of the pack. Mas Bonet's lead is down to 1min 35sec.
29 km to go: Orica-GreenEdge has the peloton strung out in a long line. Mas Bonet is looking really tired and has a gap of just 66 seconds.
23 km to go: Luis Mas Bonet has been caught. FDJ, surely thinking of another Nacer Bouhanni stage win, has put a rider at the front. Cannondale and Sky are moving up.
18 km to go: Crash! Movistar riders are down. Looks Like Castroviejo and Malori. Probably trouble grabbing a mussette. Riders are back up and on the road, chasing.
13 km to go: Orica-GreenEdge remains at the fornt with help from FDJ.
Bam! Adam Hansen (Lotto-Belisol) attacks. No reaction so far.
12 km to go: Hansen has 22 seconds.
9 km to go: Sky has moved to the front. Hansen has just 9 seconds. Pack is descending at 94 km/hr. There is a bridge coming up and everyone wants to be first over it. Then there is a stiff uphill section.
5 km to go: Tony Martin is dragging the field at a rocket-fast speed. Omega Pharma has several riders at the front. Lots of swarming and fighting for position at the front.
2 km to go: Over the narrow bridge. It's all strung out. Giant-Shimano at the front.
1 km to go: On the climb, 6%. Katusha attacks. Still together.
The finish: Caruso is slightly off the front. The other blow by him. It's a drag race between Dan Martin and Michael Matthews. Matthews takes it while Martin hits his bars in frustration. That stage win and its time bonification gives Matthews the GC lead.
