The Race: Another hot, dry day in southern Spain. Temperatures hit 40C (+100F).

A soon as the riders had finished the neutralized section and the flag had dropped, a four-man break jumped away from the pack: Javier Aramendia (Caja Rural), Gert Joeaar (Cofidis), Sébastien Turgot (Ag2r) and Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar).

Protecting their race leader Michael Matthews, Orica-GreenEdge put several riders at the front of the pack. Over the first of the day's two categorized climbs Jimmy Engoulvent (joined by Amets Txurruka who had bridged from the peloton) led by a few seconds. Back in the pack the heat and the climb was starting to wreak havoc with many of the riders.

The second climb, the Alto del Catorce por Ciento, a second-category ascent, sent about two-thirds of the peloton out the back door, including several big-time sprinters like Peter Sagan and Nacer Bouhanni. But, John Degenkolb and Michael Matthews did survive. All of the breakaway riders were caught.

Alejandro Valverde was part of of a four-man move that went clear on the descent, but the pack was well aware of the danger and chased with vigor, catching the last of the break with nine kilometers to go.

That left abut sixty riders to contest the sprint. John Degenkolb timed his move perfectly, coming from several riders back to win the stage by a couple of bike lengths.

Race leader Michael Matthews was third today, preserving his overall lead.

Stage 4 Live Updates:

Weather at Córdoba at 1PM local time: 34C (93F) and forecast to go to 39C (103F)! some clouds but will clear to full sun. 24% humidity. Wind from the north at 5 km/hr (3 mph)

Km 23, 142 km to go: All 198 riders signed in and started today. During the first kilometer a four-man break went clear: Javier Aramendia (Caja Rural), Gert Joeaar (Cofidis), Sébastien Turgot (Ag2r) and Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar). The quartet currently leads the peloton by 3min 46sec.

Km 44, 121 km to go: Orica-GreenEdge has put several riders at the front of the peloton and the break's gap has come down to 2min 25sec. After an hour of racing the average speed has been 41.6 km/hr

Km 69, 96 km to go: It's blisteringly hot and dry. Very early in the stage riders were going back to their team cars for water bottles. During yesterday's hot stage Omega Pharma went through 200 bottles. The break is 2min 48sec ahead of the Orica-GreenEdge led peloton. Even with a category two climb near the finish, Orica-GreenEdge remain confident in Michael Matthews and his ability to repeat yesterday's win, "...yesterday we showed that our team is perfect and we should be able to do it again."

Km 87, 78 km to go: Results for the intermediate sprint at Posadas, 1st Sébastien turgot, 2nd Gert Joeaar, 3rd Jimmy Engoulvent. The Orica-GreenEdge-led peloton has kept the break of four riders within reach. Right now the gap is 2min 25sec.

Km 108, 56 to go: The race is coming to the first of two categorized climbs, the third category Alto de San Jeronimo. The break has just 33 seconds.

54 km to go: Sébastien Turgot (Ag2r) has been dropped by the break on the climb. Now there are three off the front with a gap of just 17 seconds. The peloton is quite strung out on the climb with lots of riders dropped.

Amets Txurruka (Caja Rural) has attacked the peloton and is trying to bridge up to the break.

48 km to go: Txurruka has blown by the breakaways in a hunt for the three KOM points at the top of the San Jeronimo. Jimmy Engoulvent rode back up to Txurruka and now the pair are riding together, off the front.

Results of the San Jeronimo KOM: 1st Amets Txurruka, 2nd Jimmy Engoulvent, 3rd Francisco Aramendia.

46 km to go: It's Txurruka and Engoulvent off the front, 12 seconds in front of the first group of the peloton. The peloton broke up on the climb and descent and is coming back together.

42 km to go: Movistar is at the front of the peloton. It looks like the various chasing groups have caught the pack. Lots of riders are back at the team cars getting bottles. Txurruka and Engoulvent have grown their lead to 40 seconds.

If the third category San Jeronimo broke things up as it did, the coming second-category ascent combined with the terrible heat should cause a lot of riders a lot of distress. Both Peter Sagan and Nacer Bouhanni were distanced on the San Jeronimo.

After three hours of racing the average speed os 39.3 km/hr.

39 km to go: The two leaders are now on the finishing circuit. The pack crossed the line 34 seconds later.

32 km to go: Results of the Cordoba intermediate sprint: 1st Amets Txurruka, 2nd Jimmy Engoulvent, 3rd Luis Mas Bonet.

30 km to go: We're on the second category Alto del Catorce por Ciento. The two leaders have been caught and riders like Fabian Cancellara, Peter Sagan and Yauheni Hutarovich are in trouble. Lots of riders are being shelled. Nacer Bouhanni is dropped. Sky is at the front of the peloton.

29 km to go: Sky is dishing out some hurt and with their increase in the speed, more riders have been dropped. Race leader Matthews is in the peloton, I'd guess about two-thirds back.

Movistar has taken over the duty of leading the pack.

Matthews is drifting towards the back of the pack.

26 km to go: Bam! Winner Anacona and Adam Yates attack. Looks like Alejandro Valverde and Romain Sicard are chasing. The four have come together for the descent.

22 km to go: Alarms are going off in the peloton as Valverde leads the quartet down the hill. Valverde is upset that the lead motorcycle isn't going fast enough. Tinkoff-Saxo is leading the chase in the pack. The Valverde quartet has 22 seconds.

19 km to go: Damiano Caruso is chasing the Valverde break. Cadel Evans had a technical problem but looks to have rejoined the pack. Gap to Valverde group is 18 seconds. Caruso has been caught.

Results for the KOM points at the top of the Alto del Catorce por Ciento: 1st Winner Anacona, 2nd Adam Yates, 3rd Romain Sicard.

11 km to go: Romain Sicard has a flat, but the other three have a lead of 10 seconds. It looks like they will be caught and we'll have a big sprint.

9 km to go: The catch is made. Three Tinkoff-Saxo riders at the front. Maybe 40 riders are in the peloton, the rest have been distanced on the climb and descent. John Degenkolb has survived as has Michael Matthews.

Orica-GreenEdge is at the front, keeping the speed high.

4 km to go: Orica-GreenEdge still leads. No one has tried a flier yet.

2 km to go: Adam Hansen attacks and has a nice gap.

Under the Red Kite: Hansen is caught. The teams have organized their trains.

The Finish: From several riders back John Degenkolb leaps past everyone for a clear win. He put a couple of bike lengths between himself and the pack.
