The Race: As soon as the flag dropped Tony Martin (Omega Pharma) and Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Belisol) broke away. But given Martin's credentials as a multiple world time trial champion, the pair were given little freedom. Martin sat up and Ligthart tried to go it alone.

Late in the stage as the road began to rise, Tinkoff-Saxo massed at the front and sharply increased the speed. That was it, not only for Ligthart's escape but also for a lot of riders who weren't paying attention. The peloton broke up into at least three groups. The most serious casualty was Ryder Hesjedal, who never got back on and lost more than three minutes.

It was an uphill sprint and BMC ramped up the speed in the closing kilometers, planning to unleash Philppe Gilbert. Gilbert did go, but he didn't have the suds to make his attack stick.

The sprinters who had survived Tinkoff-Saxo's mugging went surging by. Yesterday's stage winner John Degenkolb headed to the right, riding next to the barrier, but leaving just enough room to tempt the reckless. Indeed, Nacer Bouhanni tried to go through a hole between Degenkolb and the barrier that really wasn't there with the spectators leaning over with their long clappers. Degenkolb prevailed and took his second consecutive stage. Bouhanni protested that Degenkolb had not held his line, but it was clear from the video that he had and the protest went nowhere.

Michael Matthews finished 11th, in the front group, to remain the GC leader. Tomorrow is a category one hilltop finish. Expect fireworks and some big changes to the standings.

Stage 5 live updates:

Weather at Ronda, Spain at 1 PM local time: 29C (84F) and forecast to climb to 35c (95F). Wind from the east-southeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). Dry, humidity is currently 48% but will drop to 24% as the day warms. Some clouds, but it will turn to full sun. 0% chance of rain.

Km 15, 165 km to go: All 198 riders started today. Almost as soon as the flag dropped Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Belisol) and Tony Martin (Omega Pharma) broke away. They currently have a lead of 3min 34sec. This will be another hot day in Spain.

Km 29, 151 to go: Ligthart and Martin are being kept on a moderately short leash. They haven't been allowed much more than a three-minute lead. Currently they are 2min 55sec ahead of the Giant-Shimano and FDJ led pack.

Km 52, 128km to go: The pack isn't letting riders of the quality of Tony Martin and Pim Ligthart just run away. The gap is only 1min 25sec and the peloton can see the duo when the road straightens.

Km 60, 120 km to go: Results of the intermediate sprint at Encinas Reales: 1st Pim Ligthart, 2nd Tony Martin and 3rd Nacer Bouhanni. FDJ and Giant-Shimano continue to do the hot, hard work of leading the pack. The break's gap is 1min 37sec.

Km 77: After two hours racing the average speed is 36.4 km/hr. Ligthart and Martin have a gap of 1min 33sec.

Km 90, 90 km to go: The escapees are 1min 25sec ahead of the field. Orica-GreenEdge has said it is not going to spend a lot of energy leading the pack today and be too tired to help make a good leadout train. They expect Michael Matthews to lose the lead in the next couple of days anyway. Thursday's stage six has a first-category hilltop finish.

Tony Martin has sat up and is waiting for the peloton, leaving Pim Ligthart to gone on alone.

Km 106, 74 km to go: Without world time trial champion Tony Martin in the break, the pack has relaxed and decided to let Pim Ligthart ride up the road a bit. Ligthart has a gap of 2min 38sec

57 km to go: Ligthart has 1min 30sec. Savvy move by Chris Froome. He was casually riding near the front and then zipped off the front with a teammate to contest the Campillos intermediate sprint. Ligthart won it, but Froome was second and took two bonus seconds. Christian Knees was third. FDJ was caught napping and missed out on the chance for Nacer Bouhanni to get Green Jersey points.

Pim Ligthart presents no GC danger. After stage four he was in 126th place, down 16min 47sec.

45 km to go: The riders are on a stiff, but uncategorized climb at Teba. FDJ and Giant-Shimano are at the front with several Sky riders lurking just behind. Ligthart has 1min 29sec.

33 km to go: Not looking good for Ligthart. Gap is 4 seconds. He's caught. Tinkoff-Saxo is at the front, setting a hot pace. The pack has split. John Degenkolb and Bouhanni are in the second group.

30 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo still handing out some hurt. The second group is about 30 seconds behind and chasing hard. A third group is about a minute behind the leaders. We're coming to the third category Puerto El Saltillo.

26 km to go: The riders are climbing now. The first chasing group looks to be closing in on the lead group. Movistar is also helping Tinkoff-Saxo with the pacesetting. Contador is in the front group and looking comfortable. Dan Martin had been caught out but he is up in the front group now.

20 km to go: Andrew Talansky is in the second group. Bouhanni, Degenkolb and Matthews are in the front group.

16 km to go: Lots of hard work at the front by Movistar and Tinkoff-Saxo. Ryder Hesjedal is two minutes back.

Bam! Luis Mas Bonet, Amets Txurruka and Sergio Pardilla go after the Puerto el Saltillo KOM.

12 km to go: Txurruka won the Puerto el Saltillo KOM, followed by Pardilla and Mas Bonet. That's good enough for Luis Mas Bonet to remain the King of the mountains.

7 km to go: Thanks to Tinkoff-Saxo's efforts, there are still two chasing groups, one two minutes back and the second is 3min 40sec behind.

5 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo still at the front, joined by Sky and still Movistar as well.

1 km to go: The riders are heading downhill at high speed. BMC at the front.

The finish: Philippe Gilbert tries to take the uphill sprint but can't hold off the others. John Degekolb hit the front with Bouhanni trying to go inside the barrier, but there is no room for him to get by, even if he could go fast enough. Degenkolb wins the stage.
