The Race: During the first hour of stage seven, there were several breakaway attempts, all snuffed out by teams without representatives in the escapes.
About 35 kilometers into the stage, several riders went down, including Chris Froome. Froome was back up and eventually rejoined the peloton, but Ivan Santaromita (Orica-GreenEdge), Bryan Nauleau (Europcar) and Aleksejs Saramontins (IAM Cycling) had injuries severe enough to force them to abandon, the first riders to quit this year's Vuelta.
About as that was happening, four strong riders formed a smooth-working break that quickly established a good gap: Ryder Hesjedal, Johan Tschopp, Hubert Dupont and Alessandro De Marchi. At one point, about 100 kilometers into the stage, they were riding 7min 23sec ahead of the field, just 20 seconds short of making Hesjedal the Vuelta's virtual leader.
For much of the day, the pack's chase was indifferent. With about 40 kilometers to go, Trek and then Lampre started chasing in earnest. But with 18 km to go the quartet still had nearly four minutes, a big enough gap to succeed. It looked like Movistar asked Trek and Lampre to relent in their chasing efforts, since catching the breakaways was such a hopeless task.
Then things started to go wrong for some of the riders in the break. First Hubert Dupont (Ag2r) was dropped on climb. Then, while descending, Hesjedal's wheels just slipped out from under him. It looked like a photographer's motorcycle might have hit his bike.
De Marchi (Cannondale) and Tschopp (IAM Cycling) waited for a moment, then pressed on. As the road became steep, De Marchi dropped Tschopp and headed for the barn. Behind him the other three breakaways eventually joined up, but they could not make a dent in their gap to De Marchi.
De Marchi soloed in for the first Grand Tour stage win of his career. Hesjedal led the chasing trio in a minute and a half later. Philippe Gilbert won the field sprint as the peloton rumbled in 2 minutes 17 seconds after De Marchi had finished.
Chris Froome is riding a heads-up Vuelta. He jumped near the line and put two seconds between himself and the rest of the field with Valverde and Contador. He is now just two seconds behind third-placed Contador.
With his ninth-place finish Alejandro Valverde easily retained his GC lead.

Weather at Alcaudete at 1PM, local time: Another hot day at the Vuelta. 30C (86F), cloudy and forecast to climb to 35C (95F) and cloudy. Wind is currently calm and could later come from the northwest at 13 km/hr (8mph). It's dry, humidity is 22% and will drop to 17%.
Km 25, 144 km to go: There have already been several attempts to form working breaks, but each time a team not represented in the break has gone to the front of the peloton and caught the escapees.
Currently a break of four (Adam Hansen, Nikias Arndt, Bob Jungels and Manuel Quinziato) has just nine seconds, but Caja Rural want to shut it down.
Km 34, 135 km to go: Indeed, the break has been caught. The peloton is climbing the third-category Alto de Illora.
Oh no! Chris Froome just can't get a break! He crashed on the lower slopes of the climb and is now 1min 20sec behind the peloton.
Km 39, 130 km to go: Near the crest of the Illora, Froome has caught the peloton. Four riders are off the front with a gap of a little more than one minute: Ryder Hesjedal, Johan Tschopp, Hubert Dupont and Alessandro de Marchi. Steve Morabito is chasing the lead quartet, about 35 seconds ahead of the pack.
Km 55, 114 km to go: The Hesjedal group seems to have the peloton's permission. The quartet currently are 3min 22sec ahead of the field. Morabito has been absorbed by the peloton. Chris Froome and John Degenkolb have called for the race doctor. Ivan Santaromita (Orica-GreenEdge) has abandoned because of a broken finger. Presumably all three were involved in the same crash. Santaromita is the first rider to drop out of the 2014 Vuelta.
The order of the first three over the Illora: 1st Johann Tschopp, 2nd Ryder Hesjedal, 3rd Hubert Dupont.
Km 62: The break has a gap of 4min 58sec.
Km 68, 101 km to go: Two other riders involved in the crash have also abandoned: Bryan Nauleau (Europcar) and Aleksejs Saramotins (IAM Cyclng). The breakaway currently is riding 5min 40sec ahead of the peloton.
There was an intermediate sprint at Alcala de Real: 1st Johann Tschopp, 2nd Alessandro De Marchi, 3rd Ryder Hesjedal.
Km 82, 78 km to go: After two hours of racing the average speed for today's stage has been 39.7 km/hr. The break has a gap of 6min 50sec.
Km 101, 68 km to go: The break has grown its lead to 7min 23sec. Ryder Hesjedal is the best placed member of the group, down 7min 43sec. If the break gains another 20 seconds, Hesjedal will be the virtual Vuelta leader.
Next up, the indermediate sprint at Alcaudete.
Km 108, 61 km to go: Trek has gone to the front of the peloton and has started the work of closing in on the escapees. The break's gap is already reduced, now 6min 40sec.
52 km to go: Result of the Alcaudete intermediate sprint: 1st Ryder Hesjedal, 2nd Johann Tschopp, 3rd Hubert Dupont. The break is currently on the second category Alto Ahillo, 6min 10sec ahead of the field. Trek is still working at the fornt of the field.
40 km to go: Julian Arredondo of Trek leads the pack up to the top the climb. Fabian Cancellara, who had been doing a lot of the work pulling the peloton has flatted and is getting a new wheel.
The Ahillo has been crested and Tinkoff-Saxo leads on the descent. The break has a gap of 5min 16sec.
The first three over the Ahillo: 1st Johann Tschopp, 2nd Ryder Hesjedal, 3rd Hubert Dupont.
36 km to go: Lampre-Merida is at the front of the pack. Gap is 5min 23sec. There is every possibility that the break will make it to the finish.
32 km to go: Lampre and Trek are still chasing. The Hesjedal break still has 4min 49sec. While Hesjedal is 7min 43 secnd behind race leader Valverde, the other three in the break are at 24 minutes and more down in the GC
24 km to go: Fabian Cancellara, who had flatted, is still chasing to get back in the peloton. Break's gap is 3min 52sec. The riders in the break continue to work well together. It looks like everyone is taking his pulls. To review, the riders in the break: Ryder Hesjedal, Johan Tschopp, Hubert Dupont and Alessandro de Marchi.
18 km to go: With a gap of 3min 56sec, I think this break will succeed. Trek and Lampre are hammering at the front of the peloton, but it's looking like too little, too late. Movistar looks to have chosen not to burn up the team defending Valverde's lead this early in the Vuelta.
15 km to go: The break's gap is 3min 22sec. Hubert Dupont has been dropped from the break. Hesjedal has crashed. It looks like the camera bike ran over Hesjedal's bike. De Marchi and Tschopp are pressing on.
Now De Marchi has dropped Tschopp and is trying to go alone.
12 km to go: Some Movistar riders, including Valverde, have moved near the front of the peloton, but Lampre remains at the front doing the work. De Marchi is 3min 19sec up the road. Hesjedal is 38 seconds behind De Marchi.
7 km to go: Alessandro De Marchi is riding powerfully, 3min 12sec ahead of the pack. The peloton is not chasing with the same fervor. It looked like Movistar talked to the Lampre riders and asked them to back off the speed since the break could not be caught. Johann Tschopp is chasing at an unkown gap with Hesjedal and Dupont riding together behind Tschopp.
4 km to go: De Marchi still has 3min 17sec. He has this in the bag if he stays upright. Hesjedal, Dupont and Tschopp are together, about 1min 35 seconds behind De Marchi.
1 km to go: De Marchi is in Alcaudete, headed to the finish. He still has 3min 15sec.
The finish: Alessandro De Marchi (Cannondale) takes a terrific solo victory. He punches the air in celebration. This is his first Grand Tour stage win. Average stage speed, 41.9 km/hr
A scuffed-up Hesjedal takes second about 90 seconds later, followed by Dupont and Tschopp.
A crash in the field sprint: a Giant-Shimano rider, Warren Barguil, went down pretty hard. He's up and walking his bike across the line. Philippe Gilbert won the field sprint.
