The Race: The roasting heat the Vuelta has suffered so far eased a bit today.

The peloton let a break of Elia Favilli (Lampre-Merida) and Francisco Aramendia (Caja Rural) ride away during the day's first kilometers. They were allowed a maximum gap of a bit more than seven minutes. But since this was a stage with no categorized climbs, the sprinters' teams had no intention of letting a break run away.

First Giant-Shimano and then FDJ, looking to protect John Degenkolb and Nacer Bouhanni's chances moved to the front and began closing the gap. With 35 kilometers to go, the pair had been absorbed. It looked like we were going to have a normal, dull day of controlled racing with a furious final kilometer.

But...The wind started blowing from the right and several teams, Tinkoff-Saxo, Trek BMC and Sky, started mercilessly flogging the peloton and it quickly fractured into several echelons. Almost all the big GC riders and important sprinters were in the front group.

But near the end John Degenkolb and Nairo Quintana were dropped from the front group had to chase with furious intensity. This was hard, quality bike racing and no one was giving any gifts. Degenkolb and Quintana clawed their way back to the front group, but surely Degenkolb's legs were ruined by the chase for the coming sprint.

About 50 riders contested the sprint, led under the Red Kite by Omega Pharma. First of the big guns to fire was FDJ's Nacer Bouhanni who blasted like a bullet to the front. It looked like he had gone too soon, but he kept driving and no one could get by him. Bouhanni won the stage with Michael Matthews second. Degenkolb was not even close, the chase had taken its toll.

Race leader Alejandro finished 22nd, in the front group to retain his red jersey.

Stage 8 live updates:

Weather at Albacete at 1PM local time: Looks like the baking heat is going to relent a bit today. 28C (82F) with mixed sun and clouds, forecast to climb to 32C (89F). Wind from the south-southeast at 16 km/hr (10 mph). Humidity 45% and no chance of rain.

Km 33, 174 km to go: 195 riders signed to start today. Three riders crashed out yesterday, Bryan Nauleau (Europcar) has a broken nose. Aleksejs Saramotins (IAM Cycling) has an injured shoulder, but nothing broken. Ivan Santaromita (Orica-GreenEdge) was thought to have broken his hand, but he has a dislocated finger, instead.

Chris Froome crashed yesterday and gave everyone a scare, but he's fine and even took back two seconds in the sprint.

Two riders are off the front, Elia Favilli (Lampre) and Francisco Aramendia (Caja Rural). The pair are currently riding 7min 8sec ahead of the Giant-Shimano led peloton.

Km 56, 151 km to go: Today is the 2014 Vuelta's longest stage and the only one over 200 km. It also has no categorized climbs, so it will be one for the sprinters. Hence Giant-Shimano is thinking of another John Degenkolb stage win and is at the front keeping the break from running away.

Aramendia and Favilli currently have a lead of 6min 18sec.

Km 77, 130 km to go: As expected, FDJ, thinking of sprinter Nacer Bouhanni, has joined Giant-Shimano at the front of the peloton. The break's lead is 6 minutes. After two hours the average speed is 39.5 km/hr.

Km 100, 107 km to go: The break's gap is 5min 40sec. Alberto Contador had some small mechanical problem which appears to be solved and his Tinkoff-Saxo teammates are bringing him back to the peloton.

Km 126, 81 km to go: Results of the intermediate sprint at Alcaraz: 1st Elia Favilli, 2nd Francisco Aramendia, 3rd John Degekolb. Currently Favilli and Aramendia are 4 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Km 147, 60 km to go: The gap has really fallen, the lead duo now have just 1min 18sec. The pair still look good, pedaling well. But I am sure they are doomed. This stage is too big an opportunity for the sprinters. Sky is up at the front with FDJ and Giant-Shimano.

Km 157, 50 km to go: The pack is continues to close in on Favilli and Aramendia. The gap is down to 66 seconds. Giant-Shimano and FDJ continue to do the work of pulling the peloton.

Results of the intermediate sprint at El Jardin: 1st Elia Favilli, 2nd Francisco Aramendia, 3rd Sergio Paulinho.

Km 172, 35 km to go: The pair have been caught, it's all together. Sky is at the front, controlling he pace, surely trying to keep Froome out of trouble. Tinkoff-Saxo is also riding near the front.

29 km to go: The speed is going up and the peloton is stringing out. Now Trek has come to the front. 65 km/hr right now. The wind is starting to blow from the right. Might things break up under this pressure?

26 km to go: Indeed, the pack is fracturing into echelons. Sky, Belkin, BMC, Tinkoff-Saxo are hamerring hard at the front.

22 km to go: It looks like the big GC guys (Froome, Contador, Evans, Valverde) are in the front group, along with Peter Sagan and John Degenkolb. First echelon is 21 seconds behind.

14 km to go: The first chasing group caught the leaders. It looks like Nacer Bouhanni is now in the front group. Tinkoff-Saxo is at the front right now pushing hard.

8 km to go: Oh, the first group broke apart. Degenkolb and Quintana are in the chasing group. BMC pounds away at the front of the first group. This is a hard day of real racing.

5 km to go: The chasers with Degenkolb and Quintana have linked up with the front group.

3 km to go: Giant-Shimano is going straight to the front. Omega Pharma has its train at the front.

2 km to go: Pack is strung out in Albacete. We'll have a big sprint.

Under the Red Kite: Sagan is near the front with Michael Matthews.

The Finish: Orica-GreenEdge is at the front, but Nacer Bouhanni shot out like a spit grapeseed to take the stage. Looks Like Matthews was second.
