The Race: In the day's early kilometers, former race leader Nairo Quintana crashed for the second time in as many days. That signaled the end of his Vuelta as he was taken to a hospital for examination.

Paris–Roubaix: The Inside Story

A break didn't go clear until the stage was 65 kilometers old. Vasil Kiryienka, Pim Ligthart, Johan Le Bon and Elia Favilli soon were more than a a minute ahead of the field with Caja Rural rider Peio Bilbao trying join the quartet. Bilbao did bridge the gap, but the five riders were never allowed more than a four-minute gap. Katusha was intent upon keeping a lid on the action, planning on setting Joaquin Rodriguez loose on the final ascent. Today featured a hilltop finish at Santuario de San Miguel de Aralar, a tough climb, well-suited to Rodriguez' talents.

By the time the final ascent started to bite, all the breakaways had been absorbed by the now very reduced peloton. Sky set a furious pace at the front while Chris Froome dangled off the back.

A few kilometers from the summit, Robert Gesink launched what looked like a stage winning attack, but he was caught with a kilometer to go. And then Astana's Fabio Aru blasted off the front. He still had lots of gas in the tank and drove to the finish. Near the top he wavered a bit, but he was still able to cross the line six seconds ahead of the Alejandro Valverde-led chasers. Valverde's bonification for second place cut Alberto Contador's lead to 20 seconds.

Despite his difficulty at some points during the stage, Froome finished with the front group of Valverde, Contador and Rodriguez.

Contador remains the GC leader. He looked quite comfortable during the entire ascent, but was isolated, without teammates sooner than the other contenders.

Stage 11 live updates:

Weather at Pamplona at 1:05 PM, local time: 27C (80F) and sunny. Forecast is for the temperature to climb to 31C (87F) with the wind from the north-northwest at 16 km/hr (10 mph). Humidity is 36% and there is there is 0% chance of rain.

Before the start: Former race leader Nairo Quintana has signed in. After his high-speed crash yesterday he says he has a sore ankle and hip.

Sign-in has finished and the peloton is riding through Pamplona in the neutralized portion of the stage. No overnight withdrawals, all 194 riders who finished the stage 10 time trial started today.

Km 10, 143 km to go: There have been a couple of attacks. First Adam Hansen and Johan Le Bon tried their luck and then a group of 17 tried to escape, both attempts were neutralized. Katusha brought back the big group.

Km 34, 119 km to go: A crash took down Niaro Quintana (Movistar) and Steve Morabito (BMC). Both riders have abandoned the Vuelta. Quintana is on his way to the hospital.

There were more break attempts, but at this point the peloton is all together.

Km 50, 103 km to go: A group of 27 riders has gone clear. No names or time gap yet.

Looks like the break has been absorbed. After 64 minutes of racing the peloton has averaged 46.9 km/hr.

Km 64, 89 km to go: Surprising results of the intermediate sprint at Tafalla: 1st Alejandro Valverde, 2nd Alberto Contador, 3rd Ivan Rovny. Contador had attacked before the sprint, looking for the bonus seconds. Clearly Valverde, now the undisputed Movistar team leader with Quintana's departure, wasn't going to let Contador just take them without a fight.

Bad day. Ag2r rider Maxime Bouet has abandoned.

Km 65: Looks like the peloton has given a break permission to go up the road: Vasil Kiryienka, Pim Ligthart, Johan Le Bon and Elia Favilli. They are 65 seconds ahead of the pack.

Another abandonment, this time FDJ rider Thibaut Pinot.

Km 70: The break of four is 2min 50sec ahead of the peloton with lone rider Peio Bilbao (Caja Rural) chasing, about 30 seconds behind the break.

Bilbao made it. He has joined the four breakaways to make a group of five. The gap is now four minutes.

Km 72, 81 km to go: Katusha is controlling the peloton and has brought the break's gap down to 3min 30sec

Km 96, 57 km to go: Results of the Estella intermediate sprint: 1st Pim Ligthart, 2nd Vasil Kiryienka, 3rd Johan Le Bon. The break's gap is down to 1min 55sec.

Km 97: Vasil Kiryienka has attacked the break. He has a gap of 16 seconds.

Km 112: Vasil Kiryienka (Sky) presses on alone, 3min 51sec ahead of the peloton. Between Kiryienka and the pack, Elia Favilli and Peio Bilbao chase, 1min 40sec behind Kiryienka. Johan Le Bonn and Pim Ligthart have been dropped from the break.

Katusha continues to lead the pack, surely working for a hard attack on the final ascent, a hilltop stage finish, from Joaquin Rodriguez.

Km 118, 34 km to go: The riders are on on the 3rd category Lizarraga. Cadel Evans suffered an untimely puncture (aren't they all?), but has rejoined the peloton. Kiryienka's gap is down to 3min 27sec.

29 km to go: Kiryienka crested the Puerto de Lizarraga 3min 4sec ahead of the pack.

24 km to go: Everyone is descending the Lizarraga with Kiryienka 2min 24sec ahead of the field. Bilbao and Favilli are still in between.

Km 135, 18 km to go: Favilli and Bilbao have been caught by the peloton. Katusha is still hammering hard at the front of the pack. Kiryienka's gap is down to qmin 23sec.

Trek, Sky and other teams are moving to the front in anticipation of the climb to the finish at Santuario de San Miguel.

12 km to go: Kiryienka has just 58sec. The climb will begin in about 2 km.

9 km to go: We're on the final climb. Kiryienka is being absorbed as I write this. Valverde and Contador are near the front. Riders are being shelled off the back.

8 km to go: Trek rider Arredondo made a probing attack, but he's caught quickly. Sky rider Dario Cataldo leads the now very reduced pack. Looks like all the big GC riders havemade the cut. Gradient is 9%

6 km to go: Froome doesn't look good. He's lost contact with the front group and has now regained the leaders.

Bam! Warren Barguil has attacked and has been joined by Robert Gesink.

5 km to go: Gesink has dropped Barguil, who is being caught by the Movistar-led pack. Froome is still riding near the back of the lead group. Valverde, Contador and Rodriguez are up near the front.

Gesink has 17sec. Don't see any Tinkoff-Saxo riders in the lead group to help Contador. Looks like about 12 riders in the front group.

3 km to go: Bam! Dan Martin attacks.

2 km to go: Martin has a real gap. Gesink is still off the front with 20 seconds. Froome is dropped again and then claws his way back.

Now Froome leads the peloton, out of the saddle on the 14% gradient section.

And now comes Contador with Valverde on his wheel.

1 km to go: Gesink has been caught and I think Martin is also absorbed. Fabio Aru now attacks.

Aru is opening up a big gap. 8 seconds.

The finish: Froome leads the chase with Valverde and Contador on his wheel.

Fabio Aru wins the stage. A few seconds later Valverde leads the chasers across the line.

Alberto contador remains the GC leader.
