The Race: Given that this was a completely flat stage, eight circuits of 20.8 km, a sprint finish had to be assumed. In fact, in 2012 when a similar course was used here, John Degenkolb was the winner.

Almost as soon at the two-kilometer neutralized section was completed, Cannondale rider Matthias Krizek took off alone. The peloton was in no mood to race hard today and Krizek was given and took a lot of rope, eventually gaining a gap of nearly nine minutes.

With about 75 kilometers to go, both FDJ and Giant-Shimano put a rider at the front of the peloton to start bringing Krizek back. But no one got too excited about the task. By the start of the final lap Krizek still had 83 seconds.

But by then the the fight for the front had become serious and the speed was really ramping up. Krizek was caught with twelve kilometers to go.

As the race sped to the finish, Tinkoff-Saxo stayed at the front, keeping race leader Alberto Contador out of trouble. And trouble came, big time, in the form of a a crash at the final corner. A lot of the the big-name sprinters went down, including Nacer Bouhanni and Andrea Guardini.

Lampre sprinter Roberto Ferrari went early, but John Degenkolb fighting off a determined Tom Boonen flew by him. Boonen kept coming, but Degenkiolb was not to be denied today as he won his third stage of this year's Vuelta.

The top GC men finished in the front group and Alberto Contador remains the overall leader with Alejandro Valverde second At 20 seconds.

Chasing peloton

This is how it was for a lot of the seocnd half of the stage: A single Giant-Shimano rider and and FDJ domestique chasing Krizek with Tinkoff-Saxo lined up behind them keeping Alberto Contador up front and out of trouble. Photo ©Sirotti

FDJ

Then FDJ massed at the front but near then end they seemed to have run out of gas were nowhere to be seen. Photo ©Sirotti

Stage 12 live updates:

Weather at Logroño at 2PM local time: 28C (82F) and partly cloudy. The forecast is for the temperature to climb to 32C (90F) with full sun. Wind from the north-northwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph). Humidity 37%

Km 10, 156 km to go: Today will be a completely flat stage with eight laps of a 20.8 km circuit. All 190 finishers of yesterday's stage signed in and started.

Currently Austrian rider Matthias Krizek of Cannondale is on a solo break, 5min 8sec ahead of the peloton.

Km 28, 138 km to go: Krizek is on his second lap of the Logroño circuit, riding 5min 20sec ahead of the pack. The average speed so far is not very torrid, 34.3 km/hr

Km 41, 125 km to go: Krizek has started his third lap and has extended his lead to 8min 7sec.

The order of the first intermediate sprint: 1st Matthias Krizek, 2nd Nacer Bouhanni, 3rd Michael Valgren Andersen.

This is a sprinter's stage (John Degenkolb won here two years ago) and at some point a serous chase will be mounted, but so far the average speed after 1hr 19min of racing is 32.7 km/hr.

Km 57, 109 km to go: In fact, when the gap went out to more than nine minutes the sprinters' teams went to the front and began the chase. Both Giant-Shimano and FDJ have riders at the front and the gap has already come down, currently 8min 45sec.

Km 65, 101 km to go: Matthias Krizek is on the fourth of eight laps of the Logroño circuit, 7min 35sec ahead of the field.

Km 77, 89 km to go: Krizek's gap has dropped below seven minutes, it's currently 6min 50sec. But no land speed records are being set today. After two and a quarter hours of racing the average speed is 34.4 km/hr

76 km to go: Even though the pack is still taking it easy, Krizek's lead is down to 5min 16sec. There is a single FDJ and a single Giant-Shimano rider working the front, followed by an army of Tinkoff-Saxo riders.

62 km to go: Still a single FDJ rider and a Giant Shimano rider at the front, obviously working for Nacer Bouhanni and John Degenkolb. Then a long line of Tinkoff-Saxo riders with Alberto Contador in the middle. Average speed has gone up a little, now 37 km/hr.

53 km to go: Cannondale is certainly getting a lot of TV time with Krizek's long break. Krizek is currently 3min 13sec ahead of a still-casually riding peloton. Krizek takes each corner as fast as he can and gets out of the saddle out of each corner. Krizek has taken a little time out of the pack as I wrote this, the gap is back to 3min 20sec.

Km 123, 43 to go: Krizek has just finished his sixth lap. FDJ has put several riders at the front, wanting to take control of the race for Nacer Bouhanni. I still see only one Giant-Shimano rider at the front. The pack finished the sixth lap 3min 41 seconds behind Krizek.

34 km to go: Krizek is still 3min 23sec ahead of the field. Results of the second intermediate sprint: 1st Matthias Krizek, 2nd Nacer Bouhanni, 3rd Daniele Bennati

31 km to go: Looks like someone hit a light switch and things have just speeded up. The peloton is starting to line out and Krizek's gap is suddenly down to 2min 45sec. It's FDJ doing the pacemaking at the front of the peloton.

24 km to go: Gap is 2min 8sec. Belkin is moving toward the front. The fight for a good position in anticipation of the sprint looks like it's beginning.

Gap dropped to 1min 46sec as I typed this update.

20 km to go: Krizek gets the bell for the last lap. He's out of the saddle, trying to keep up his speed, trying to stay away from the peloton as long as he can. The speed is up to 50 km/hr. Gap is 1min 23sec.

Lampre has moved up now as has Astana, Belkin and Europcar.

Has FDJ burned too many matches leading the pack?

15 km to go: I didn't expect Krizek to be off the front this late in the stage, but he still has 63 seconds. No way he's making to the end.

13 km to go: FDJ no longer controls the front of the peloton. Tinkoff-Saxo is at the front, keeping Contador out of trouble. Gap is 19 seconds.

12 km to go: Krizek is caught. Astana and BMC lead. Giant-Shimano is finally trying to get up to the front.

8 km to go: Giant-Shimano is still missing from the front. BMC is at the front. There they are, getting closer to the front. Krizek has been spit out the back.

6 km to go: Giant-Shimano is in place as the speed has climbed to 61 km/hr.

4 km to go: Degenkolb is near the front. FDJ is fighting to get back up to the front. Contador is fourth man from the front.

2 km to go: Manuel Quinziato is trying a flier and is caught.

The finish: Roberto Ferrari went early. A crash in one of the final turns took out Andrea Guardini among several other riders, probably Bouhanni.

John Degenkolb takes the stage after holding off a surging Tom Boonen.
