The Race: Well, today was a terrific day of racing with a couple of surprises at the end. It took a while for the day's break to get established, but when it did, it had some real horsepower: Jose Rodolfo Serpa, Carlos Verona, Tom Boonen, Romain Sicard, Ryder Hesjedal, Imanol Erviti, Bart de Clercq, Przemyslaw Niemiec, Jaco Vener, Oliver Zaugg, Adam Hansen, Robert Wagner, Luke Rowe, David Arroyo, Fabio Felline, Louis Meintjes, Yannick Martinez, Jacques van Rensburg, Johannes Frohlinger, Guillaume Levarlet, Sergio Miguel Paulinho, Luis León Sanchez and Alexandr Kolobnev.

Olympics 50 Craziest Stories

On the first-category San Glorio, David Arroyo and Luis Leon Sanchez attacked the break. By the time the break had caught the pair, the escape was down to twelve riders.

The peloton never chased the break with vigor and by the time the twelve reached the base of the final climb, the fiendishly difficult La Camperona, they still had a gap of more than six minutes. The stage winner would come from the break. This took the time bonifications out of the day's GC fight.

Signalling Chris Froome's ambitions, Sky assembled at the front of the peloton, taking over from Omega Pharma.

Up front, Tinkoff-Saxo rider Oliver Zaugg took off on the steep part of the climb, with just a couple of kilometers to go. For a long time it looked like he had a lock on the stage victory. But from well back, Ryder Hesjedal surged, flying past Zaugg with unbelievable momentum. Hesjedal won the stage after spending much of the long day in a break.

In the Red Jersey group, with about 1,500 meters to go, the first rider to attack was Valverde. Alberto Contador marked him and then Joaquin Rodriguez and Fabio Aru closed the gap. Chris Froome was distanced.

Then Contador gave it all he had, but it wasn't enough. Rodriguez and Aru closed the gap. And then, improbably, Chris Froome arrived. Valverde couldn't take the high heat the other GC men were throwing and was dropped.

Then came the day's next big surprise. Froome attacked with overwhelming force, dropping Contador, Aru and Rodriguez. Rodriguez dug deep and slowly closed the gap, but was still short of catching the Sky rider at the finish.

The net results for the day: Contador remains the leader, now with a lead of 42 seconds over second place Valverde. Froome has climbed up on to the podium, in third, 73 seconds behind Contador. Rigoberto Uran has dropped to fifth place.

Luis Leon Leon Sanchez is the new KOM. And among the days' abandons were Peter Sagan, Lawson Craddock and Johan Tschopp.

There is no way to predict how this race is going to turn out.

Stage 14 live updates:

Weather at Sabero (near the finish) at 2PM local time: 26C (78F), mostly cloudy. The temperature is not forecast to change, but there may be a bit more sun. Wind is from the west-northwest at 13 km/hr (8 mph). Only a 20% chance of rain.

Km 77, 128 km to go: Today's stage with its hilltop finish at the 1st category La Camperona had an early start. The peloton has just crested the second category Collada de la Hoz with a break of 23 riders, 5min 18sec ahead of the peloton

IAM Cycling rider Johan Tschopp abandoned.

Km 80, 118 km to go: The day's final ascent is difficult. The last 2.7 km of the 5-6 km ascent has portion that exceeds 19% gradient. Alberto Contador is packing a 39 x 30. Next posting will have the names of the riders in the break, which descending the de la Hoz and is 5min 28sec ahead of the field.

Km 90, 110 km to go: The riders in the break: Jose Rodolfo Serpa, Carlos Verona, Tom Boonen, Romain Sicard, Ryder Hesjedal, Imanol Erviti, Bart de Clercq, Przemyslaw Niemiec, Jaco Vener, Oliver Zaugg, Adam Hansen, Robert Wagner, Luke Rowe, David Arroyo, Fabio Felline, Louis Meintjes, Yannick Martinez, Jacques van Rensburg, Johannes Frohlinger, Guillaume Levarlet, Sergio Miguel Paulinho, Luis León Sanchez and Alexandr Kolobnev. The gap seems to be steady as the break finishes the descent, it's currently at 5min 14sec

MTN-Qhubeka has done a good job here, with three riders in the break: Meintjes, van Resnburg and Venter.

The order of the first three over the de la Hoz: 1st Luis Leon Sanchez, 2nd Jacques van Rensburg, 3rd Adam Hansen.

Oh, and to finish catching up, the first intermediate sprint at km 35 went this way: 1st John Degenjolb, 2nd Michael Matthews, 3rd Ramon Sinkeldam.

Km 98, 103 km to go: Dominic Klemme is the second IAM Cycling rider of the day to abandon.

Wilco Kelderman, who finished third yesterday, did not enjoy the day's racing. He said, "Third place yesterday does not give me any great confidence because I did not quite feel right. I hope to do well today but I do not like this kind of climb."

Approaching the first category Puerto de San Glorio, the break of 23 riders has a lead of 5min 16sec.

Km 115, 86 km to go: We're on the San Glorio. Three riders have attacked the break: Jacques van Rensburg, David Arroyo and Luis Leon Sanchez. They are nineteen seconds ahead of the other 20 breakaway riders and 5min 45sec ahead of the pack. None of the escaped riders is a GC threat. The best placed is Przemyslaw Niemiec, who is down 11 minutes.

Km 117, 84 to go: Van Resnburg was dropped by the two Caja Rural riders, Arroyo and Sanchez. It looks like the breakaway is coming apart on the long climb. Teammates Arroyo and Sanchez are climbing strongly and are 6min 29sec ahead of the peloton.

Tinkoff-Saxo leads the peloton.

77 km to go: Arroyo and Sanchez are 18 seconds ahead of the thirteen riders who remain from the original break and are 7min 25sec ahead of a lined-out peloton.

Omega Pharma is at the front of the lined-out peloton, setting a very hot pace. Riders are getting dropped. Rigoberto Uran is the Omega Pharma GC man, sitting in third place. He must be feeling good for his teammates to be putting in this much effort this early. Omega Pharma has two riders (Paulinho and Zaugg) in the break up the road.

Peter Sagan has abandoned.

Cadel Evans, KOM Luis Mas Bonet and John Degenkolb are among the victims of Omega Pharma's intense pacemaking.

73 km to go: Arroyo and Sanchez are six minutes ahead of the peloton with the thirteen chasers just 31 seconds behind the lead duo. There will probably be a regouping of the breakaway riders in the valley after the San Glorio's crest.

70 km to go: Arroyo and Sanchez are about caught by the chasing thirteen. the gap back to the field is down to 5min 18sec. Indeed, the pair is caught. We now have a break of fifteen.

Omega Pharma continues leading the peloton.

50 km to go: There are twelve riders in the break, 4min 58sec ahead of the field.

The order over the San Glorio: 1st Luis Leon Sanchez, 2nd Yannick Martinez, 3rd Bart de Clercq, 4th Oliver Zaugg, 5th Ryder Hesjedal.

Km 153, 48 km to go: The riders in the break: Luis León Sánchez, Carlos Verona, David Arroyo, Romain Sicard, Ryder Hesjedal, Yannick Martinez, Alexandr Kolobnev, Imanol Erviti, Bart De Clercq, Louis Meintjes, Adam Hansen and Oliver Zaugg.

Gap is 5min 7sec.

42 km to go: Astana has put a man at the front of the pack, followed by a line of Omega Pharma riders. Gap has grown to 5min 28sec.

Giant-Shimano rider Lawson Craddock (USA) has abandoned.

Km 160, 40 km to go: Results of the intermediate sprint at Riaño: 1st Alexandr Kolobnev, 2nd David Arroyo, 3rd Bart de Clarcq.

34 km to go: The break has a lead of 6min 7sec. The peloton is still being led by Omega Pharma with Tinkoff-Saxo right behind. Alberto Contador remains vigilant, near the front. The break may very well go the distance. If true, that will take the time bonuses out of play.

28 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo has taken over the front of the peloton. The break's lead keeps growing. Now its 6min 34sec.

18 km to go: Still a ways from the start of the climb to La Camperona. The twelve riders are 6min 8sec ahead of the field. Three Tinkoff-Saxo riders lead Contador at the front of the peloton.

9 km to go: The day's winner will surely come from the break, which still has 5min 51sec. Tinkoff-Saxo still leads the pack as they ride through Sabero. The final climb is about to begin. It's fairly mild to start, but gets quite steep in the final three kilometers.

6 km to go: Whoa! Sky has assembled at the front of the peloton. I guess Chriss Froome is ready to fight.

4 km to go: Adam Hansen leads the break, 4min 39sec ahead of the Sky-led pack. In the break, Ryder Hesjedal looks around and slips in near the front. The climb is starting to bite.

2 km to go: Ow! It's steep, 14%. In the break Louis Meintjes ups the pace and we're down to seven riders in the front group. No action in the peloton yet.

Now it's 18%. Bam! There goes Hesjedal and Oliver Zaugg goes by him.

Zaugg grows his gap.

1.5 km to go: Bam! Valverde goes. Contador marks him and Rodriguez closes the gap. Froome is being distanced.

1 km to Go: Up front Zaugg is still clear. In the peloton, Valverde hammers with Contador, Moreno and Rodriguez and Aru right with him.

Bam! Contador drops the others. Rodriguez is closing the gap.

Contador is dancing on the pedals with Rodriguez next to him. Aru has clawed his way up to them. And now Froome has joined the Contador group.

The finish: Oliver Zaugg is headed to the finish with a small lead over Hesjedal.

Holy Mackerel! Hesjedal went flying by Zaugg! Ryder Hesjedal wins the stage.

Back with the GC men, Froome attacks and has dropped Contador, Aru and Rodriguez. Valverde is gone.

Froome presses on, but Rodriguez is driving hard but can't quite catch Froome. Contador finishes a few seconds after Froome and Rodriguez.

What a day of racing. Ryder Hesjedal comes from way back to win the stage and Froome also looks like a lost cause and then drops the GC favorites.

Contador remains the GC leader with a 42 second lead over Valverde. Froome is now third @ 1min 13sec
