The Race: Alberto Contador and Chris Froome rode away from the rest of the field today in what was billed as the Vuelta's Queen Stage, allowing Contador to extend his overall lead and put Froome within three seconds of second place.

Early in the race thirteen riders went clear: Rohan Dennis, Laurens Ten Dam, Gianluca Brambilla, Luis León Sánchez, Johan Le Bon, Romain Sicard, Ivan Rovný, Peter Kennaugh, Adriano Malori, Peio Bilbao, Alessandro De Marchi, Wouter Poels and Damiano Cunego. Katusha kept the break from much more than a five minute-lead.

Omega Pharma's GC man, Rigoberto Uran, is suffering from bronchial troubles and was dropped when the climbing got tough. He has dropped from fifth place in the GC to 18th, almost 19 minutes down. What a shame.

The break fractured on the penultimate climb, the first category San Lorenzo. There a fight broke out between Tinkoff-Saxo rider Ivan Rovny and Omega Pharma's Gianluca Brambilla. The judges always take a dim view of riders' throwing punches and threw both both pugilists out of the Vuelta.

For a while Alessandro de March, Wout Poels and Gianluca Brambilla were in front of the break. Brambilla was helping power the trio when he was very publicly told he was disqualified. De Marchi continued on his own for a while but under pressure from the Sky-led pack the other members of the break were absorbed.

With four kilometers to go Chris Froome attacked. He was immediately marked by a very attentive Alberto Contador. Neither Alejandro Valverde nor Joaquin Rodriguez could go with the pair.

For three kilometers Froome led Contador while Valverde and Rodriguez worked to limit their losses.

Under the Red Kite Contador attacked Froome and opened a good sized gap. He pressed on to win the stage. A surprising Froome came in fifteen seconds later. Then, to make Valverde's misery complete, De Marchi crossed the line third, taking the small time bonus. Contador's excellent ride has given him a 1min 36sec lead over Valverde. Froome is third, just three seconds behind Valverde.

Luis Leon Sanchez is the new leader of the mountains classification.

Stage 16 live updates:

Weather at Las Morteras (near the day's penultimate ascent) at 2PM local time: 21C (70F), wind from the southwest at 10 km/hr (6 mph) and partly cloudy. 20% chance of rain.

Km 53, 107 km to go: Currently there is a break of thirteen riders 7min 52 sec ahead of the field. The first category Calledona is in the rear-view mirror and the break is approaching the next climb, the category two Alto del Cordal. Next post will have the names of the riders in the break.

Tony Martin did not start the stage.

Km 58, 102 km to go: The riders in the break: Rohan Dennis, Laurens Ten Dam, Gianluca Brambilla, Luis León Sánchez, Johan Le Bon, Romain Sicard, Ivan Rovný, Peter Kennaugh, Adriano Malori, Peio Bilbao, Alessandro De Marchi, Wouter Poels and Damiano Cunego.

They are 6min 58sec ahead of the field.

Km 50, 100 to go: The break is on the climb with smaller gap, now 6min 25sec.

A little catching up: The order over the first climb of the day, the Calledona: 1st Luis Leon Sanchez, 2nd Rohan Dennis, 3rd Alessandro De Marchi, 4th Johan Le Bon, 5th Gianluca Brambilla.

While ascending the Calledona, the break of thirteen was well up the road, but Alberto Contador, Chris Froome and Alejandro Valverde also became separated from the field with a gap of about 14 seconds. Joaquin Rodriguez missed the move. Rodriguez's Katusha team went to the front and on the descent the Contador trio was caught.

Km 66, 94 km to go: Rigoberto Uran has been dropped by the peloton on the Cordal ascent. He's 30 seconds back. The break continues to lose ground, now it has a lead of 5min 20sec.

Km 72, 88 km to go: The Cordal climb is finished and the riders are on the descent. The peloton is being led by Katusha. The gap to the break of thirteen is 5min 7sec. Rigoberto Uran, the GC man for Omega Pharma, is still having a bad day and remains off the back. Two teammates are with him, Martin Velits and Carlos Verona.

On the Alto de la Corbertoria, no distance reading at this point: Omega Pharma used the descent to get Uran back into the pack. Katusha leads the peloton, followed by a line of Tinkoff-Saxo riders and then Movistar.

Uran is again dropped and again Velits and Verona have gone back to help him. His director, Davide Bramati, told Spanish TV that Uran slept badly the last few evenings and has bronchial problems.

The order over the Cordal: 1st Luis Leon Sanchez, 2nd Peio Bilbao, 3rd Rohan Dennis.

Km 84, 76 km to go: Looks like the Vuelta has solved its transponder problems and we have distance readings again. The thirteen riders up front are 3min 45sec ahead of the peloton. There are about 80 riders left in the Katusha-led peloton, the rest have been dropped as the race approaches the top of the Corbertoria.

Uran is about 30 seconds behind the Red Jersey group.

Km 85, 75 km to go: Luis Leon Sanchez was first over the Corbertoria. He should be the new KOM at the end of the day. Fabian Cancellara is trying to bridge up to the break of thirteen. He has a gap of 3min 50sec to close. The peloton is 4min 15sec behind the break.

Rigoberto Uran has made it up to the peloton.

58 km to go: Cancellara continues his pursuit of the break. He's 3min 28sec behind. Belkin rider Robert Gesink punctured but with help from teammates he regained the peloton. The riders are still descending the Corbertoria.

49 km to go: The break has started to ascend the first category Puerto de San Lorenzo. Fabian Cancellara is 3 minutes behind the thirteen riders and the peloton is 4min 44sec back.

Here are the riders in the break: Rohan Dennis, Laurens Ten Dam, Gianluca Brambilla, Luis León Sánchez, Johan Le Bon, Romain Sicard, Ivan Rovný, Peter Kennaugh, Adriano Malori, Peio Bilbao, Alessandro De Marchi, Wouter Poels and Damiano Cunego.

Katusha is still leading the peloton. Their efforts are intense enough to have the pack lined out.

44 km to go: Here was the order over the Corbertoria: 1st Luis Leon Sanchez, 2nd Peio Bilbao, 3rd Adriano Malori, 4th Johan Le Bon and 5th Damiano Cunego.

While we're at it, there was an intermediate sprint at Pola de Lena: 1st Damiano Cunego, 2nd Peio Bilbao, 3rd Gianluca Brambilla.

Cancellara has closed to within 2min 53sec of the break, the pack is 4min 35sec behind.

41 km to go: Fabian Cancellara has been caught by the peloton, which is 2min 52sec behind the break. Sky leads the pack.

39 km to go: There has been some bickering in the break regarding who would share the pacemaking. It broke out into a fight with real punching between Ivan Rovny (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Gianluca Brambilla (Omega Pharma). Rovny surely was being told by his team to just sit in and perhaps slow the break. It was Rovny who struck first.

38 km to go: Brambilla, filled with adrenaline, has left the break with Alessandro De Marchi. Sky has massed at the front of the peloton. The gap is 2min 35sec

32 km to go: De Marchi and Brambilla are descending the San Lorenzo, three minutes ahead of the pack, which is down to 22 riders. The big GC guys are there but one. Rigoberto Uran is again dropped.

The ten riders remaining in the break are two minutes behind De Marchi and Brambilla.

23 km to go: Sky leads the pack. Contador is sitting about fifth man back. Up front Wout Poels has joined Brambilla and De Marchi. They are about three minutes ahead of the peloton. The break sitting between the lead trio and the peloton is down to 8 riders and are 2 minutes behind the leaders.

Order over the San Lorenzo: 1st Alessandro De Marchi, 2nd Gianluca Brambilla, 3rd Wout Poels, 4th Luis Leon Sanchez, 5th Rohan Dennis.

19 km to go: Alberto Contador got a bike change and as he worked his way back to the peloton a press motorbike almost took him out. Contador was quickly back in the pack.

Gap up to the break of three is 2min 39sec. Rohan Dennis, who was part of the orginal break has been caught by the pack.

18 km to go: The lead trio have started the final climb to La Farrapona, with an average gradient 6.2%. They seemed to have had hard words about who was going to work. They are 2min 30sec ahead of the pack. There are only two riders in between, 75 seconds behind the lead trio.

I count five Sky riders at the front of the peloton.

15 km to go: Holy Mackerel! The race commissar drove up next to Gianluca Brambilla in the break and told him he was out of the race because of his fight with Ivan Rovny. Brambilla sits up, furious.

13 km to go: De Marchi and Poels continue with their break without Brambilla. Their lead is down to 1min 20sec ahead of the peloton, still led by Sky.

It looks like Ivan Rovny is still racing. Now Rovny is talking to his team car and now eases up and drifts back. Looks like he's out of the race as well.

11 km to go: De Marchi has dropped Poels. He's only got a minute's lead. All the riders who were racing between the lead break and the peloton have been absorbed. Only De Marchi is off the front.

8 km to go: De Marchi is doing well. He's grown his lead to 90 seocnds. Sky is still at the front of the peloton. Contador is riding fifth man back, right behind Froome, followed by several Tinkoff-Saxo teammates.

6 km to go: Sky motor Philip Deignan flatted and won't be helping Froome any more. De Marchi still has a minute and a half.

In the much smaller peloton, Valverde and Rodriguez are up near the front with Froome and Contador.

5 km to go: The climb has started to bite and De Marchi's lead is shrinking, now 76 seconds. The gradient is 8%.

4 km to go: Mikel Nieve of Sky is pounding at the front, dropping riders. Aru, Contador, Froome, Martin, Valverde are still there. I don't see Robert Gesink.

Bam! Froome Attacks! He is marked by Contador. Valverde and Rodriguez can't go with the move.

3.5 km to go: Aru chases Rodriguez and Valverde. Froome leads Contador. The gap to De Marchi is just 35 seconds. Aru has made contact with Valverde and Rodriguez.

3 km to go: Froome and Contador are catching De Marchi. Valverde and Rodriguez have dropped Aru.

Froome and Contador have a half-minute. So far De Marchi has been able to stay with Froome and Contador.

2.5 km to go: Froome is doing all the work while Contador sits on. Froome attacks again, De Marchi is dropped. The pair are 34 seconds ahead of Valverde, Aru (he's back) and Rodriguez.

2 km to go: Froome continues to lead Contador, now 40 seconds ahead of the Valverde trio.

Under the Red Kite: Froome still leads Contador, 43 seconds ahead of the Valverde trio.

Bam! Contador attacks and opens a big gap. He's headed to the stage win and the time bonus as well.

The finish: Contador hammers to the finish to win the stage. Froome chased as well as he could, but his second at about 14 seconds is a terrific performance. De Marchi takes third, taking the time bonus from fourth-place Valverde. This should move Froome up to second place. Nope! Valverde has held on to second place by a few seocnds.
