Stage 17 finish

The Race: Four riders did not start today. The most notable was Rigoberto Uran, Omega Pharma's protected GC man. Suffering from bronchitis, he lost a lot of time in the three mountain stages. Also, Christian Knees (Sky) is sick and Haimar Zubeldia (Trek) has an infected boil. Tanel Kangert (Astana) as well is out of the Vuelta. That leaves us with a peloton of 169 riders.

As a stage with no categorized climbs, Giant-Shimano spent most of the day keeping the day's break on a short leash. The break - Rohan Dennis (BMC), Bob Jungels (Trek), Luis Mas Bonet (Caja Rural), Elia Favilli (Lampre) and Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN-Qhubeka) - was never allowed to gain a gap of more than four minutes.

But two of the riders were especially tenacious. Bob Jungels and Elia Favilli were not caught until the race had passed the Red Kite. The peloton's efforts to contain the fast-moving break left the big sprinters without their leadout trains. Also, with some pavé before the sprint, riders who might otherwise not be tempted decided to try the sprint, most notably Fabian Cancellara.

John Degenkolb won a close sprint against Michael Matthews and Cancellara (see photo above), the German's fourth stage win of this Vuelta. Will his 149 points against Valverde's 114 be good enough for him to take the Green Jersey home? Degenkolb is very reserved about his chances since there are stages coming that suit Valverde very well.

The big GC men finished in the front group, so Alberto Contador remains the overall leader, 1min 36sec ahead of Valverde.

Stage 17 live updates:

Weather at Ferrol (about a third into the stage) at 2PM, local time: 26C (79F), partly cloudy with the wind from the north-northeast at 11 km/hr (7 mph). Forecast is for scattered thunderstorms and a 40% chance of rain.

The Start: There were a number of non-starters today. The most notable was Rigoberto Uran, Omega Pharma's protected GC man. Suffering from bronchitis, he lost a lot of time in the three mountain stages. Also, Christian Knees (Sky) is sick and Haimar Zubeldia (Trek) has an infected boil. Also Tanel Kangert (Astana) is out of the Vuelta. That leaves us with a peloton of 169 riders.

Km 32, 158 km to go: The first riders to get away were Rohan Dennis and Bob Jungels, who slipped their leashes at the 23rd km. They were soon joined by Luis Mas Bonet, Elia Favilli and Daniel Teklehaimanot. The quintet are currently 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Giant Shimano rider Warren Barguil crashes, but is now reintegrated in the peloton.

Km 46, 145 km to go: This is a stage with no categorized climbs, so it is not surprising the Giant-Shimano is policing the race, hoping for another John Degenkolb stage victory. The break of five is working well together and now have a lead of 3min 3sec. After 1hr 9min of racing the stage's average speed is 40 km/hr

Km 60, 131 km to go: Giant-Shimano is keeping the quintet's gap at 3 minutes as they ride through Ferrol.

Km 73, 118 km to go: Results of the intermediate sprint at Pontedeume: 1st Rohan Dennis, 2nd Elia Favilli, 3rd Bob Jungels. The break's lead is 2min 30sec.

Km 91, 100 km to go: Giant-Shimano doesn't want to let this stage get away. They are keeping the break's lead at just 2min 46sec.

Km 105, 86 km to go: The break of five riders - Rohan Dennis (BMC), Bob Jungels (Trek), Luis Mas Bonet (Caja Rural), Elia Favilli (Lampre) and Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN-Qhubeka) - have passed through the feed zone. They currently have a lead of 3min 48sc. Astana rider Jacopo Guarnieri had a mechnical problem with his seat, but it has been repaired.

59 km to go: Gap is 3min 42sec. Giant-Shimano and Omega Pharma are at the front of the pack with a single Orica-GreenEdge rider leading. Saxo-Tinkoff are near the front, of course. FDJ is moving up. FDJ has only four riders left in the Vuelta and no longer have their master sprinter, Nacer Bouhanni, who withdrew several stages ago.

46 km to go: The break still looks like a smooth working machine. They have a lead of 3min 17sec. The peloton is strung out with an army of Giant-Shimano riders pulling at the front.

37 km to go: The five breakaways have a lead of 3min 2sec. The peloton is no longer strong out. The chase doesn't seem to be as intense right now.

28 km to go: The break seems to be losing cohesion. Luis Mas Bonet has been dropped. Teklehaimanot is having trouble hanging on. The break's lead is down to 2min 14sec. The road looks lumpy with no flat or straight sections, stressing the breakaway riders.

19 km to go: The four riders in the break have seen their lead cut to 2 minutes.

14 km to go: In the break Bob Jungels takes a hard uphill pull and Teklehaimanot struggles to stay with them. Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff-Saxo) has a flat and gets a lightning-fast wheel change. Omega Pharma is at the front of the pack. Tom Boonen must fancy his chances today. Now Orica-GreenEdge is pulling. Last time gap was 1min 22sec.

Now the break's gap is just one minute.

9 km to go: Teklehaimanot is dropped on a modest hill. The break of three riders is now 48sec ahead of the field.

6 km to go: 39sec.

4 km to go: 22sec.

1 km to go: The break is caught. We should have a big sprint since the peloton is largely intact.

The Finish: Another stage win for John Degenkolb who had the courage of his convictions to be the first sprinter to jump. No one could come around him, though Orica-Greendge's Michael Matthews tried.
