Adam Hansen wins stage 19

The Race: The day's break didn't emerge from the peloton until the 26th kilometer, but it was a trio of good, strong riders: Wouter Poels (Omega Pharma), Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Belisol) and Laurent Mangel (FDJ).

Giant-Shimano never let them get too much of a lead, but they were able to survive until just 20 kilometers to go. This was just as the last climb of the day began, Monte Alto Faro.

On the ascent Sky set a fierce pace that sent two-thirds of the peloton out the back, but it did not deter Alexey Lutsenko, who blasted off the front. Importantly, two riders survived Sky's blistering pace up the mountain, sprinters John Degenkolb and Michael Matthews.

Lutsenko was caught just five kilometers from the finish, setting up what would surely be a drag race between Degenkolb and Matthews.

But Lotto-Belisol rider Adam Hansen had other plans. As Lutsenko was caught Hansen took off, was caught and went again. This time he opened a 14-second gap while the peloton seemed to chase without firm purpose.

Hansen rode strongly all the way to the finish, crossing the line with five seconds to spare. Degenkolb won the field sprint in front of Filippo Pozzato.

The big GC men were in the front group, so there was no change to the top of the GC rankings. Alberto Contador remains the overall leader, 1min 19sec ahead of Chris Froome.

Stage 19 live updates:

Weather at Cangas de Onis (finish) at 11:00 AM, local time: 22C (72F), wind from the south-southeast at 5 km/hr (3mph), misty. Forecast is for the temperature to climb to 24C (76F) with an 80% chance of rain, perhaps thunderstorms. Wind will shift to a 8 km/hr (5 mph) breeze from the north.

The Start: Bob Jungels (Trek) did not start today's stage, giving us a starting peloton of 163 riders

Km 40, 140 km to go: After several break attempts were negated by the pack, a group of three were allowed to go clear at km 26: Wouter Poels (Omega Pharma), Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Belisol) and Laurent Mangel (FDJ). The trio currently has a lead of 3 minutes.

Km 53, 128 km to go: Giant-Shimano is working at the front of the pack and has brought the break's lead down to 2min 47sec. Clearly John Degenkolb fancies his chances today. When this stage was first presented, the two climbs were rated first category. Now they are classified category two, generally the kind of ascents Degenkolb can get over. And, it's fifteen kilometers from the top of the final climb, Alto Monte Faro, to the finish.

Km 68, 112 km to go: The order at the A Guarda intermediate sprint: 1st Laurent Mangel, 2nd Pim Ligthart, 3rd Wouter Poels. The three are currently riding 3min 10sec ahead of the peloton.

Km 75, 105 km to go: The break has started to ascend the first climb, the second category Monte Alto da Groba three minutes ahead of the Giant-Shimano led pack.

Km 78, 94 km to go: The break - Wouter Poels (Omega Pharma), Pim Ligthart (Lotto-Belisol) and Laurent Mangel (FDJ) - has crested the Alto da Groba 2min 23sec ahead of the field. After 2hr 20min of racing, the average speed had been 37.3 km/hr.

Km 110, 70 km to go: The order over the Groba: 1st Wouter Poels, 2nd Laurent Mangel, 3rd Pim Ligthart. They have completed the descent and are approaching the Vigo intermediate sprint. The break has an even two minutes.

Km 117, 64 km to go: Results of the Vigo intermediate sprint: 1st Pim Ligthart, 2nd Wouter poels, 3rd Laurent Mangel. Gap is down to 1min 46sec. Sky has said they will save their strength and not work to chase breaks today, given the difficulty of tomorrow's stage.

56 km to go: Giant-Shimano remains at the front of the peloton with five riders, including Degenkolb. They aren't giving the break much rope. The gap is 1min 55sec.

37km to go: Orica-GreenEdge is helping with the chase now for Michael Matthews. Roads are wet, but it doesn't look like it's raining now. The lead trio has a lead of 1min 17sec.

Now it's raining.

33 km to go: The riders in the break continue to work well together. The chasing peloton, now lined out, has reduced the gap to 44 seconds. It doesn't look good for the break.

29 km to go: Pim Ligthart is at the front of the break, riding hard, in and out of the saddle. The streets are dry here and it's not raining right now. Gap is 41 seconds. Tinkoff-Saxo and Sky have moved up to the front, wanting their GC guys in good postion for the climb.

The road is curvy as it follows the coastline.

25 km to go: Tinkoff-Saxo is pulling the pack. We've got about five kilometers to go before the climb. Gap is 21 seconds. Speed is 49 km/hr as Matteo Tosatto pounds at the front of the pack.

Gap is 8 seconds.

20 km to go: The trio is caught as the Alto Monte Faro climb begins. Riders are getting dropped as Alexey Lutsenko attacks the front and gets a gap.

John Degenkolb is riding with Contador and the other GC guys up front. Sky leads the pack.

17 km to go: The carnage from Sky's pacemaking on the hill is considerable. The pack is losing riders like crazy. Degenkolb is still near the front and Michael Matthews remains in the front group as well. The gradient is 10%. Lutsenko still dangles off the front, with about 10 seconds

15 km to go: Degenkolb survived the ascent. Don't know about Matthews. Lutsenko is descending alone. Sky leads the pack, giving Froome a safe trip down the mountain.

Samuel Sanchez takes off, descending like a madman. A Sky rider, perhaps Dario Cataldo, has crashed.

11 km to go: Lutsenko is still alone, 15 seconds off the front. Sanchez is caught.

8 km to go: Lutsenko is going for it, but Giant-Shimano has cut his lead to 8 seconds.

6 km to go: Lutsenko still dangles off the front. Michael Matthews did survive the climb. He's in that front group. 51 km/hr.

5 km to go: Lutsenko is caught. Adam Hansen tries an attack, he's marked, but it really strings out the pack. Hansen has a small gap now. Daniel Navarro is trying to bridge up to Hansen.

3 km to go: Hansen is 7 seconds ahead. Valverde has made it up to the sprinters at the front.

2 km to go: Hansen has 14 seconds.

Under the Red Kite: Hansen still has 12 seconds!

The Finish: Hansen does it, he wins stage 19! John Degenkolb wins the field sprint. Hansen collapsed to the ground after he crossed the line. What a ride!
