The Tour of California men's race has been run since 2006. Off and on, the organisers had run women's races, but nothing on the scale of a true stage race for women. There had been a criterium from 2008 to 2010 and an individual time trial was run from 2011 to 2013. In 2014 there was a criterium and and individual time trial.
For 2015, a three-stage event, the Amgen Tour of California Women's Race, was announced, to be run in along with the men's event, and to be held in May. Three days of stage racing will be held just before the men's event, the final stage to be run with the first of the men's stages. Then, there will be an invitational time trial five days later.
