Photos from the Elite Men's World Championship road race:
Horrible weather. Here Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish lead the pack. No British or Irish riders finished.
Vincenzo Nibali leads Philippe Gilbert
Fabian Cancellara
The wet weather (and slippery white painted street markings) caused crashes all day long.
Thor Hushovd
The Italians kept up the pressure nearly all day.
Daniel Martin and Christopher Froome
Edvald Boasson Hagen
Alberto Contador
Michael Albasini
Vincenzo Nibali has crashed. Italian team director Paolo Bettini is getting him back on the road. Thanks to some outrageous drafting of the team car, Nibali was quickly back up to the peloton.
Late in the race Giovanni Visconti tried to escape.
The winning move: Da Costa with Nibali (note torn shorts) and Valverde. They are chasing Joaquin Rodriguez. Da Costa would leave the pair and successfully bridge.
After Da Costa bridged up to Rodriguez, they slowed and manuevered for postion.
Rui Da Costa (white jersey) comes off Rodriguez' wheel to win the sprint.
Da Costa knows he's the World Champion
Alejandro Valverde beats Vincenzo Nibali for third.
Thomas Voeckler was the last classified finisher.
Rodriguez left nothing on the table. He attacked over and over.
Rui Alberto Da Costa is the new Rainbow Jersey
The podium, from left: Joaquin Rodriguez, Rui Alberto Faria Da Costa, Alejandro Valverde
