The race: Here's the report from winner Primoz Roglic's Team Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe.

With a spectacular finale, Primož Roglič secured the overall victory at the 104th edition of the Volta a Catalunya. The 35-year-old Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe leader claimed his second win in the prestigious race, following his 2023 triumph. In addition to the overall title, Primož Roglič also secured two stage victories, as well as the points and mountain classifications.

The final stage of the Volta a Catalunya turned into a thrilling battle decided by mere seconds. Primož Roglič started the last stage with a one-second deficit to Juan Ayuso. The strategy for Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe was clear: attack. Roglič won the first bonus sprint, taking the virtual lead, but Ayuso responded by winning the second sprint and reclaiming the top spot.

With 21 kilometers to go, Primož Roglič made his decisive move. On the third-to-last ascent of Montjuïc, Barcelona’s iconic hill, he launched a powerful attack and broke away solo. He maintained his lead all the way to the finish line. With a 14-second advantage over his pursuers, Primož Roglič not only celebrated the stage win but also secured overall victory.

Primož Roglič:
“This Volta was extremely tight and came down to the bonus seconds on the last stage. After the second sprint, I had no choice—if I wanted to win, I had to do something. In the end, I had the legs to finish it off. The team worked brilliantly, we raced well, and we had a great time. I really enjoyed this week.”

After a short recovery period, Primož Roglič will begin his preparation for the Giro d’Italia. The first Grand Tour of the season kicks off on May 9 with the Grande Partenza in Albania.

Plato's Apology

Plato's dialogue Apology is available in both Kindle eBook & audiobook versions. To get your copy, just click on the Amazon link on the right.

Weather at the the city of Berga, on the route, near the finish, at 1:10 PM, local time: 10C (50F), partly cloudy, with the wind from the northeast at 29 km/hr (20 mph). There is a 6% chance of rain

Rated ascents:

  • Km 63.5: Coll de la Batallola, Cat. 3
  • Km 99: Coll de Pradell, Hors Categorie
  • Km 95 (approx): Collada de Sant Isidre, Cat. 1
  • Km 118.6: Queralt, Cat. 1

The race: Here's the report from second-place Pavel Bittner's Team Picnic-PostNL:

Due to strong wind conditions, the sixth day of racing at Volta Ciclista a Catalunya was adapted and the parcours changed. Originally still set to be a day for the climbers and GC riders after Friday evening’s changes, further amendments on Saturday saw it swing more in the balance of the sprinters and puncheurs.

Team Picnic PostNL therefore set out with the plan to go all-in for the finale with Pavel Bittner, who had picked up a good third place the previous day. A long neutralised period eventually gave way to racing the final 30 kilometres; where immediately the team was switched on. Romain Combaud initially set tempo at the front of the peloton looking to control things but attacks soon flew. Frank van den Broek was sharp and quick to react on them, acting as a foil and to have the team represented.

It eventually came back together coming into the closing kilometres, where Simmonds launched his winning attack with just around one kilometre to go. Van den Broek pulled to try and close the gap before swinging off, and coming into the last couple of corners Bittner kicked to try and close it down. Unfortunately the finish line came just too soon as Simmons held on for the win with a very fast finishing Bittner taking a strong second place on the day.

Bittner said: “It was really cool that the team was on such a high level of motivation that we could go for a result today. In the end with all of the changes we raced only 31 minutes and it was really fully gas. Frank countered some moves and that was working well so I could save my legs in the bunch. Coming into the final I had a good position. Simmons went with around one kilometre to go. Looking back, maybe I should have trusted my legs more and went for it as I felt really good. In the end I launched after him, I don’t know at how far to go, and was really closing in on him but it was just not enough at the line. It’s slightly frustrating but I’m really happy with the shape and how it went. We’ll see how the final day goes tomorrow.”

Team Picnic PostNL coach Pim Ligthart added: “I have to give credits to the guys, they were always ready to race no matter what type of stage we got in the end. When we got the news before the start that it was heading more into a sprinter’s type race, we looked to the final together with Pavel, to make a plan to control the day and go for it with him in the finish. During the stage when we heard over the race radio that the neutralised part was going to end, the guys were really switched on. Frank did really well to police the attacks and stay in the wheels there to make sure we were represented. We focused on Pavel in the final and the finish came just about 10 metres too early for him and we came second today. We were really focused on racing today, and the guys did that. In the end we missed out on a win, which is a pity, but we can definitely say we were in the race once more here.”

Here are the updates I wrote and the organizers grappled with the difficult weather conditons:

3:00 PM local time: The stage is de-neutralized and the second lap has been eliminated. GC times are to be taken 5 km from the finish and then the riders will contest the stage win in Berga. The riders had asked for the stage to be shortened because it was getting late and they will still have to travel to their hotels in Barcelona.

2:13 PM: The stage began the first of two 60 km laps. The race is neutralized until the organizers have been able to fully assess the conditions. If they decide that the conditions are OK, the riders will start racing at the beginning of the second 60 km lap.

This message was posted at 1:35 PM: We've got the first details on the revamped stage. It will be 146 km long and won't feature any of the three categorized climbs that were on the revamped route that was drawn up yesterday. Starting and finishing in Berga, the route will head to Gironella, Puig-reig, Santa Maria de Merlès and return to Berga via Vilada.

This message was posted at 1:18 PM: Riders are signing in for the start, but we're still waiting for confirmation if the route for today's stage. The Pyrenees are currently experiencing very high winds, and these led to last night's removal of the Coll de Pradell from today's route. It now appears the the route will undergo further changes due to the strength of the wind.

Here is the race organizer's earlier message concerning the high winds and the now shortened stage:

Following the recommendations from the Servei Català de Trànsit and the relevant authorities, the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has been forced to shorten the 6th stage from Berga to Queralt due to the activation of the VENTCAT emergency procedure plan, which has entered the Alert phase as a result of high wind risk in Catalonia.

As a result, this 6th stage will be shortened in distance, and it will not be possible to climb the Coll del Pradell because its summit is at an altitude of 1,700 meters, where the hazards are more severe.

Thus, the stage will have a total length of 118.6 km. The Coll de la Batallola (3rd category), Collada de Sant Isidre (1st category), and the final climb to Queralt (1st category) will remain on the route, while the ascent of Coll del Pradell has been removed.

All facilities in the arrival area will be reduced to a minimum to ensure that no structures are affected by the high winds, which could pose a danger to anyone.

With this modification, the schedule has been slightly adjusted, and the stage start will be delayed to 13:55. The team presentation will take place from 12:45 to 13:45.

Matthew Brennan (Visma | Lease a Bike), Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R), Brieuc Rolland (Groupama-FDJ), Nils Eekhoff (Picnic-PostNL) & Jon Aberasturi (Euskaltel-Euskadi) did not start.

The peloton riding during the stage's neutralized first 60 kilometers.

The race: Here's the report from stage winner Matthew Brennan's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Matthew Brennan has secured his second stage win in the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. The 19-year-old talent from Team Visma | Lease a Bike left everyone behind in the final sprint after his entire team guided him through a stage dominated by echelons.

“Another beautiful victory”, Brennan said, still catching his breath at the finish. “This is truly a team win. The whole squad rode exceptionally well today. We were in a perfect position heading into the final part of the race. It’s incredibly motivating to see the work my teammates are doing all week. That really gives you wings. I’m happy I could reward all that effort with this stage win today.”

Brennan was not initially scheduled to race in Catalunya, but his team placed full trust in him. “The past days have been tough, but I’m learning so much here. The mountain stages were especially brutal, but I’m gaining experience in positioning and staying up front when it matters. Two stage wins—I wouldn’t have even dared to dream of that”, Brennan said, beaming with joy.

Stage five gets started.

This marks Brennan’s fifth victory of the season. He had previously won Le Tour des 100 Communes, GO de la Ville de Lillers, GP de Denain, and the opening stage of this race. For Team Visma | Lease a Bike, it was their 11th win of the year, following Ben Tulett’s triumph earlier in the day at the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali.

“Matthew wasn’t originally on the start list for this race”, explained sports director Marc Reef. “For him to adapt so quickly, come here, and win two stages is truly remarkable. I don’t have another word for it. We knew today would be chaotic, so we stayed sharp at key moments. We decided to take our chances and ended up with almost the whole team in the first echelon. Besides Matthew’s win, Simon Yates also made a great move in the GC, climbing back into the top ten. Hopefully, he can do something in the final weekend to cap off what has already been a fantastic Volta a Catalunya for us.”

Weather at the finish city of Montserratat 1:15 PM, local time: 18C (65F), sunny, with the wind from the east at 10 km/hr (6 mph). There is a 1% chance of rain.

Rated ascents:

  • Km 125.8: Turó del Puig, Cat. 2
  • Km 188.7: Montserrat, Cat. 1

The race: Not starting: Stanislaw Aniolkowski (Cofidis), Finlay Pickering (Bahrain Victorious), Dries De Pooter (Intermarché-Wanty), Gal Glivar (Alpecin-Deceuninck) & Quinten Hermans (Alpecin-Deceuninck). That left a starting peloton of 151 riders. Early in the stage Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) abandoned.

Here's the race report from fifth-place Mikel Landa's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

The stunning Montserrat ascent made its return as a stage finish at the Volta a Catalunya for the first time since 1995, when the race was organised in June, just a couple of weeks before the start of the Tour de France. One of the hardest climbs of this year’s edition, and one of the region’s most famous ascents, averaging 6.6% over 8.8 kilometers, Montserrat began with Soudal Quick-Step at the front of the peloton, as James Knox and Gianmarco Garofoli combined to push a steady tempo on the opening part.

The start line. Looks like a great day for a bike race.

The fight between the GC favourites was sparked by an attack of the overall leader of the race with more than two kilometers to go, a move to which Mikel Landa responded immediately. Despite being caught and distanced by Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe), who went on to win the stage from a two-man group, Landa booked a place in a small but strong chasing group and fought hard to limit the losses, which in the end were of just three seconds.

A twelve-man break had a lead of about 1min 30sec thirty kilometers into the stage.

Two accelerations of the Basque in the final kilometer saw him take a solid top five at the summit, a result which puts him fourth on the standings, just one second from the podium. His teammate Junior Lecerf – who sported the best young rider jersey Thursday afternoon – is ninth in the general classification thanks to what was another convincing ride, making Soudal Quick-Step the only team with two riders in the top ten after four stages.

  • Km 154.7: Col dela Batallola, Cat. 3
  • Km 185: Col de la Crueta, Hors Categorie
  • Km 218.6: Molina PM, Cat. 1

The race: Early in the stage Henri Vandenabeele (Lotto) abandoned. Later in the stage Rainer Kepplinger (Bahrain Victorious) Abandoned after crashing.

Here's the report from stage winner Juan Ayuso's UAE Team Emirates:

Juan Ayuso took his 6th victory of the season following an exciting sprint dual against Primož Roglič (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) at the summit finish at La Molina on stage 3. The pair crossed the line shoulder-to-shoulder, with Ayuso finally awarded the win and now moves into to the leaders jersey ahead of stage 4.

Marc Soler was chief animator on the final climb, attacking the race in trademark style and softening up the competition. The Catalan snuck away with Sepp Kuss (Visma LAB) and Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS-Astana) but were overhauled inside the final kilometre.

The peloton 85 kilometers into the stage.

As Soler led out the sprint it was Roglič who launched first, but a fast turn of pace from Ayuso in the dying metres saw the Spaniard just come out on top. Mikel Landa (Soudal-QuickStep)rounded out the podium in third. Ayuso now holds a 6” advantage over Roglic ahead of the races second mountain finish tomorrow.

Ayuso:  ” I managed to win against a great rival. I felt I had to after the team did such an amazing job. My aunt passed away last week so I’d like to dedicate this victory to her. I was only thinking of her in the last kilometre.

The final here is very tricky because you really need to be in front in the last turn and I wasn’t. Primoz showed himself as a true champion as he didn’t close me off and behaved himself and it was a fair sprint, so chapeau to him for that. I’m glad I could manage to come around him.”

The race: Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek) became sick on stage one. Neither he nor & Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) started stage two.

Here's the report from Junior Lecerf's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Figueres, the hometown of Salvador Dali – one of Surrealism’s leading exponents – hosted a stage finish at the Volta a Catalunya for the first time this century, and despite the presence of some climbs on the course and even of a bit of crosswind, it all came down to a bunch sprint.

It's time to go racing in Spain.

Junior Lecerf was there for Soudal Quick-Step, showing his speed on the final 600m averaging 4% against the big sprinters of the race and coming close to a top ten on this stage won by Ethan Vernon (Israel-Premier Tech). Being there in the finale helped the young Belgian gain a couple of places in the general classification, where he is now our team’s highest-ranked rider, in ninth, just a couple of seconds off the podium.

Both Lecerf and Mikel Landa – who is on the same time as his teammate – will have an important opportunity to move up in the standings on Wednesday’s stage to La Molina – the only summit finish in the Pyrenees of this edition. The first-category climb comes after a day with an elevation gain of almost 5000 meters.

Ethan Vernon wins stage two.

The race: 167 riders began the stage. Kamiel Bonneu (Intermarché-Wanty) did not start.

Here's the stage one report from winner Matthew Brennan's Team Visma | Lease a Bike:

Matthew Brennan secured a stunning victory in the opening stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya. The 19-year-old Brit from Team Visma | Lease a Bike powered his way to breakaway rider Tibor del Grosso in the closing kilometers before overtaking the Dutchman just before the finish line.

The start line.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with this win”, Brennan said at the finish. The 19-year-old quickly switched to analyzing the stage like a seasoned pro. “The weather conditions made it really tricky today. As a team, we did everything we could to maintain a front-row position. After my teammates put me in a good spot heading into the finale, I managed to stay near the front in the final kilometers. At that point, all I could do was go all out. I switched off my mind and gave it everything I had. The result speaks for itself.”

“Last night, I watched the finish of this stage from 2024”, Brennan continued. “I knew today would likely play out in a similar way. I think we played it just right as a team. This was the perfect scenario for us. Winning at this level means a lot.”

In harsh conditions, Brennan and his teammates rolled out of Sant Feliu de Guíxols early in the afternoon for a stage of around 180 kilometers. A traditional breakaway formed but was ultimately short-lived.

71.3 kilometers to go. Ineos Grenadiers pulls the pack with a break 39 seconds up the road.

When Del Grosso attacked from the peloton, Brennan wasted no time in responding. The sprinter, in his first year at WorldTour level, took it upon himself to lead the chase. Kaden Groves, Del Grosso’s teammate, sat on his wheel. For a long time, it looked like Del Grosso would hold on, but Brennan’s relentless effort proved decisive. Just before the line, he managed to surge past the Dutchman.

It marked Brennan’s fourth victory of the year—and his fourth victory in his last four race days. For Team Visma | Lease a Bike’s WorldTour squad, it was their ninth win of the season.

Matthew Brennan wins the first stage.

About the 2025 Volta a Catalunya:

The race organizer wrote:

The Volta Ciclista a Catalunya has activated the countdown to start, this Monday 24 March from Sant Feliu de Guíxols, its 104th edition. Until the arrival in Barcelona on Sunday 30 March, the best teams and cyclists in the world will once again gather in Catalonia to compete in seven varied stages throughout the territory, which have once again attracted a participation worthy of a grand tour, attracted by the three high altitude finishes that make the Catalan race one of the most demanding on the UCI World Tour calendar. Primoz Roglic, Juan Ayuso, Adam Yates, Egan Bernal, Richard Carapaz, Mikel Landa or Enric Mas are just some of the names that lead a star line-up in which 14 victories in the big three-week races can be found in their palmarès.

Everything is ready for a peloton of 168 riders from the best teams in the world, a total of 24, to start the 2025 edition of the Volta a Catalunya, which will start this Monday in Sant Feliu de Guíxols with three former winners of the race among its participants: Primoz Roglic (currently with Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, 2023), Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and Nairo Quintana (2016, Movistar Team). These are just some of the major attractions of the Catalan UCI World Tour race, the third oldest stage race on the calendar after the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia, which once again this year brings together a top-level participation, as demonstrated by the 14 Grand Tours that make up the track record of its participants.

A CV that includes four victories in the Vuelta a España and a Giro d'Italia of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic, who returns to the Volta Catalunya two years after his victory in 2023 and who is one of the great candidates to take over from his compatriot Tadej Pogacar. There will also be two Tour de France winners, both from the Ineos Grenadiers team, such as the Colombian Egan Bernal (winner of a Tour and a Giro, 3rd in the last edition of the Volta), and the Welsh veteran Geraint Thomas, who is facing his last season as a professional, along with former Olympic champion Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), Giro d'Italia winner Nairo Quintana (Vuelta and Giro winner), another Giro champion Tao Geoghegan Hart (Lidl-Trek), and two Vuelta winners, Sepp Kuss and Simon Yates, who will lead a strong Team Visma-Lease a Bike looking to recover from the last-minute injury loss of Danish rider Jonas Vingegaard.

However, the list of contenders is much longer, led by the young Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), who is one of the big contenders for victory a week after dominating Tirrena-Adriatica with victory. An endless list of world cycling stars including former Olympic champion Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost), a major protagonist of the Vuelta 2022 and also a podium finisher in all the Grand Tours, and current cycling stars such as Basque Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step), 2nd in the last edition, the Balearic rider Enric Mas (Movistar Team), four times on the podium in the Vuelta España, the Australian Ben O'Connor (Jayco-AlUla), who last year was runner-up in the Vuelta and the World Cup and already knows what it is to win a stage in the Volta, or the best young rider of the last edition, the Frenchman Lenny Martínez (Bahrain-Victorious), who comes from shining in Paris-Niça.

A participation that will also count one more year with a remarkable participation of Catalan cyclists led by the rider from Vilanova Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates), who this year reaches his 10th consecutive participation in the Catalan race, accompanied by Antonio Pedrero (Movistar Team), Pau Miquel (Kern Pharma Team), Abel Balderstone and Jan Castellón (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), and will also come with riders who will fight for stage victories such as the Australian, Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who has three stage victories in the Volta in his two participations.

A high-altitude Volta to put the best climbers to the test
The presence for the third consecutive year of three mountain finishes (La Molina, Montserrat and Queralt) will unquestionably mark the development of a Volta Catalunya, which once again this year combines familiar territory with new and highly anticipated features in its route.

The race will start on Monday 24th March from Sant Feliu de Guíxols, which for the fourth consecutive year will start with an initial day of nervous cycling along the Costa Brava and the Gavarres massif. Starting once again from the Club Nàutic of the Empordà town and finishing on the explosive Carretera de Girona, the stage will be 178.6 kilometers long and will include two mountain passes in the first half (Coll de Begur and Alt de Santa Pellaia), leaving the terrain open to surprises for the battle in 2023.

The second stage, starting from Banyoles, will return the Volta to one of the most visited venues in the past, the city of Figueres, which will once again host the Catalan race 56 years later. It will do so with a 177.3 kilometer stage that seems to be one of the most favorable to play for the victory among the fast men of the Volta.

The cyclists will pass the finish line twice in the capital of Alt Empordà in the final part of a day with the mountain passes of Coll del Puig de Pení and the monumental Coll de Sant Pere de Rodes (1st category) in the central part of the stage.

The high mountains will arrive in the third stage, the longest of the Volta a Catalunya since 2006, and one of the most demanding with up to 5,000 metres of cumulative positive altitude gain. It will be a day of 218.6 kilometres with a start from Viladecans The Style Outlets and five mountain passes including the finish of the first of the three high altitude finishes of the edition, the mountain resort of La Molina (1st category). The Coll de Estenalles, the Coll de la Batallola, and especially the endless Coll de la Creueta (special category) will add wear and tear to a day that will serve as the first test among the great candidates for the final victory.

The fourth stage will see one of the most important novelties of the edition with the return to Montserrat in the Volta, 30 years after the victory of Frenchman Laurent Jalabert. On the celebration of the Millennium of the magical mountain, the emblematic peak returns to the Volta Catalunya as the end of a day of 188.7 kilometers without rest through Central Catalonia, starting from Sant Vicenç de Castellet, one of the two new venues of the edition, and the Turó del Puig as the only final pass.

The Terres de l'Ebre will be the main protagonists of the fifth stage, two years after being decisive in Roglic's last victory in a memorable stage finish in Lo Port. The four regions of the Delta de l'Ebre (Baix Ebre, Ribera d'Ebre, Terra Alta and Montsià) will be part of the route of a 172-kilometre stage starting in the town of Paüls, the second new venue of the edition, and finishing in the city of Amposta. One of the routes with the least gradient of the edition, with only one qualifying pass, the Coll de la Font at the start of the stage, but with the threat of the wind in the final stretch along the Ebro Delta.

The expectation will be at its highest in the sixth stage, which will be the third mountain stage with a Berguedà on fire after the success of the last 2024. The city of Berga will be the starting point of a 159-kilometre stage that will once again put the cyclists to the test with four mountain passes and a high-altitude finish in the middle of the crowd. The Coll de la Batallola, the spectacular Coll de Pradell (special category), which will shine again after having made its debut in competition last year in the Volta, and the explosive Collada de Sant Isidre, will add all the ingredients to see the favourites playing for the final victory among the Berguedà public.

And there will still be the final party of the 104th Volta a Catalunya in its seventh stage, which will close the race and crown its winner on Sunday 30 March. The city of Barcelona, which has never failed in any edition of the centenary race, will once again host the start and finish of a final stage that will start from the Plaza de España and will be 88.2 kilometres long. As it could not be otherwise, its sign of identity will be the six laps of the Montjuïc circuit and its Alt del Castell, which will close a week of the best world cycling in Catalonia in a setting that always guarantees an incomparable sporting and public spectacle.

A week of world-class sport throughout Catalonia that will once again offer spectacular images that will reach the whole world thanks to its important global television broadcasting. The images of this Volta a Catalunya, which in Spain can be followed live on television on Esport 3, Teledeporte and Eurosport, will be distributed in 190 territories around the world through 40 international broadcasters, which will broadcast live images on all five continents. A global expectation for a cycling race that is a world reference point, and which is once again on the threshold of an edition worthy of its history.
