1996 Giro Quick Facts:

Story of the Giro d'Italia volume 2

3,990 kilometers raced at an average speed of 37.88 km/hr

162 starters and 98 classified finishers

1996 was the centenary year for both the Olympics and La Gazzetta dello Sport, the sports daily that has run the Giro since its inception in 1909.

To celebrate both anniversaries, the Giro started in Greece before transferring to Italy for the 4th stage.

The first two weeks were unchallenging, but the 13th stage was very hilly and that's when Pavel Tonkov took the lead.

He lost it for a day after the only time trial, but the next day in the mountains he retook the lead for good.

Bill & Carol McGann's book The Story of the Giro d'Italia, Vol 2: 1971 - 2011 is available as an audiobook here.
